"𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐊 𝐃𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓?" Dean asked, laying on the floor on his back. Daryl was sitting above him on the couch, drinking. The older Dixon shrugged. "Hell if I know."
Dean sighed. "do you think Lea and her family are okay?" He asked. He thought about her a lot and wondered if she and her daughter and husband were okay. He hoped they were.
A scoff left Daryl. "hell if I know." He shrugged, carelessly.
Dean sat up and moved closer to the couch "I hope they're all right. Lea was nice to me. She seemed to care about her daughter a lot. To bad we don't know if they're okay."
Daryl rolled his eyes "forget about it Dean! You only talked to the woman for two hours tops."
Dean's eyebrows furrowed and he nodded. "you're right... I'll try to forget about it." He mumbled with a slight frown. He wasn't like his brothers and father. He couldn't just brush things off as easy as they could. He wished he could. Life would be easier that way.
The room fell silent then the air and lights cut off. "What the hell?" Daryl grumbled standing up. The two walked towards the door and Daryl opened it and leaned out.
"What the hells going on?" Daryl asked and the bottle in his hand got taken as Jenner walked past.
"Energy use is being prioritized." Jenner said and the people that's not with Rick in the basement follow him down the hall.
"Air isn't a priority? And lights?" Dale asked.
"It's not up to me. Zone five is shutting itself down." Jenner said as the lights in the hall shut off.
"Hey! Hey, what the hell does that mean?" Daryl question went ignored. "Hey, man, I'm talking to you. What do you mean it's shutting itself down? How can a building do anything?"
"You'd be surprised."
"Rick?" Lori called down when Rick and the other show up. Jenner led them down the stairs to the big room.
"Jenner, what's happening?" Rick demanded walking up to the man.
"The system is dropping all the nonessential uses of power. It's designed to keep the computers running to the last possible second. That started as we approached the half-hour mark. Right on schedule."
Jenner handed Daryl's booze back out to him and the Dixon snatched it back. "It was the French." The scientist muttered, looking back at Andrea.
"What?" The blonde asked.
"They were the last ones to hold out as far as I know. While our people were bolting out the doors and committing suicide in the hallways, they stayed in the labs till the end. They thought they were close to a solution." Jenner explained to the group.
"What happened?" Jacqui asked softly.
Jenner walked up the few stairs. "The same thing that's happening here. No power grid. Ran out of juice. The world runs of fossil fuel. I mean, how stupid is that?"
"Let me tell you—" Shane tried to go after Jenner but Rick grabbed him.
"To hell with it, Shane. I don't even care." Rick said, he then turned back to the others. "Lori, grab our things. Everybody, get your stuff. We're getting outta here now!"
Everyone headed to get their things but stopped when an alarm started blaring. "What's that?" Shane asked, looking around.
"30 minutes to decontamination." Vi says
"Doc, what's going on here?" Daryl yelled grabbing Dean by the shoulder and pulling him closer.
"Everybody, y'all heard Rick. Get your stuff and let's go! Go now! Go!" Shane yelled.
The group once again stopped when Jenner closed the only way they could go to get outta there. Glenn looked towards the metal door. "Did you just lock us in? He just locked us in!" He screamed.
Letting go of Dean, Daryl started running towards Jenner. "You son of a bitch!"
"Shane!" Rick yelled seeing Daryl.
Shane ran over and pulled Daryl away from the doctor. "Hey Jenner, open that door now." Rick said walking up to Jenner.
"There's no point. Everything topside is locked down. The emergency exits are sealed." Jenner stated.
"Well, open the damn things." Daryl demanded.
"That's not something I control. The computers do. I told you once that front door closed, it wouldn't open again. You heard me say that." Jenner pointed at Rick. "It's better this way."
"What is?" Rick looked at him "what happens in 28 minutes?"
Jenner said nothing and turned away. Shane kicked his chair. "What happens in 28 minutes?! Rick yelled
"come on!" Daryl shouted.
Jenner stood up quickly. "You know what this place is?! We protected the public from very nasty stuff! Weaponized smallpox! Ebola strains that could wipe out half of the country! Stuff you don't want getting out! Ever!" Jenner yelled and sat back down. "In the event of a catastrophic power failure—in a terrorist attack, for example—H.I.T.s are deployed to prevent any organisms from getting out."
"H.I.T.s?" Rick questioned.
"Vi, define." Jenner said.
"HITs—high-impulse thermobaric fuel-air explosives consists of a two-stage aerosol ignition that produces a blast wace of significantly greater power and duration than any other known explosive except nuclear. The vacuum-pressure effect ignites the oxygen at between 5,000° and 6,000° and is useful when the greatest loss of life and damage structures is desired."
"It sets the air on fire." Jenner spoke. "No pain. An end to sorrow, grief... Regret. Everything."
"Shit." Dean whispered leaning on one of the desks and closing his eyes. This is it the end.
