28. Another Case

She was dating two guys and she liked it.

She did not feel bad about it either. She was not serious with either one and she let both Ronan and Drew know she was not interested in a relationship.

So now she had a social life. Some days she would go out with Ronan, and some days with Drew. Some days she would hang with Torricita, and sometimes she would chill by herself. In between all of that she would hang out with her sisters or CJ when she could.

Then she got a call from Victor.

"Get to my office."

Hoping it was another job, but maybe local this time, she hurried to see her brother-in-law. Once at his office, she sat at his desk and waited for him to say something.

"Ice wants me to expand the offices. We've grown in the last year and most of our highest-paying customers are out on the West Coast."

"Okay."

"I want you to go out there and help set it up."

"Me?"

"Plus, I have a case for you up there."

She did not want to go to L.A. It was not her type of crowd. She would stick out like a sore thumb, with all the made-up, infectable lips, Brazilian booty, weavalicious, everyone wanted to be a Halle Berry or Denzel Washington, singer, dancer, or model. She wanted none of those things. She wanted to remain incognito, low-key.

"I can't do high-end cases Vic, FBI might find out and flag me before I even apply."

"Then stay real low-key." He dropped a file in front of her. "This one you can be deep undercover. You're out there setting up the office, visiting family...and your ex-boyfriend."

"My what?" She snatched open the file and saw a picture of Tone and Riyah. "You've got to be kidding, right?"

"Do I look like I'm kidding?"

Victor rarely smiled. And he never kidded around.

"Vic, you can't send someone else. Don't you have guys out there? Highly trained, qualified people?"

"Wasn't it you coming up in here saying you're better than all my guys after just a year of training? Don't back down now, little princess." Victor stood and leaned forward over his desk. "Besides, he specifically asked for you."

What in the entire hell?

She tried reasoning with Victor.

She tried crying to him.

She tried begging.

Yet, here she was packed on Icee's private jet to L.A. to bodyguard her ex and his fiance. She should have had Victor drag her kicking and screaming. This was about to be a nightmare.

It was not that she still had feelings for Tone, she did not. It was just about to be awkward. What was she supposed to say to him? To her?

He never even came over to say anything to her at IceeJay's party. It was all about IceeJay, even though Icee's birthday was the same day. He played it real lowkey.

Kitty's birthday was two weeks after there's and she threw another big shindig at her house, with only immediate family and very few friends. Tone missed Kitty's big blowout, even though he was invited. It was close to finals for her, but she knew Victor was not worried about her grades, nor was she.

She used the time on the flight to study what Victor gave her about the case.

Three days ago, Tone started getting weird DMs from someone wanting to kill Riyah. They never said anything else just that they wanted to kill her and be with him. Each time he blocked and deleted, they made up a new account and sent more.

Also three days ago, while out shopping, someone was able to easily grab Riyah while she was near-naked in a dressing room, cover her mouth so she didn't scream, and almost get her out the door before she broke free.

No security? The girl was super famous. And in L.A.

Lastly, just yesterday, their house was broken into. With all the cameras and security they had, all they were able to get were images of a masked person going directly to Riyah's closest, ripping up her clothes, then going into Tone's closest and taking some of his clothes.

Not his or her expensive jewelry, so this was not a typical robbery.

They had not used Victor's security system, and they were getting that stalled this morning. Tone contacted Icee who let Victor know that this was a rush to the top type of situation. Tone did not even know she was working for Victor, but he asked for her anyway.

"Whyyyy?" she screamed out on the plane.

"Are you okay Ms. Kelly? You need anything?" the flight attendant asked her.

"No sorry."

She had to get this last piece of hesitation out of her. Once she stepped out of the plane she had to be all professional. This was business.

A car was waiting for her and they took her directly to Tone and Riyah's place to help with the installation of the better security system. She was familiar with it when Victor gave her an overview of it. Cameras everywhere they could get them, all monitored by phone. Alarm system on every window and door of the house. A guard was stationed 24-7 across the street from their house.

And her. No one was going to do a damn thing to them on her watch.

"Nola, thanks for coming!" Tone grabbed her in a hug when he saw her.

"Uh...okay." She pulled away from him. "Why me?"

"I knew no other mind could help us with this. You can help, right?"

"It's what I am training to do."

"You think it's a crazy person doing this?"

"It ain't a normal person, now is it."

Riyah rushed into the room and right up to her and grabbed her in a hug. She was taken aback by the girl acting as if she knew her when she barely noticed her at the Grammys afterparty when she was lusting over Tone.

"Thank you so much for coming and helping. Tone said you're a super genius and like chasing bad guys."

She gave Tone a side-eye as his very pregnant fiance squeezed the life from her.

"Ri, let Nola go."

"I'm sorry." Riyah moved away and then hugged Tone and kissed him as if she was putting on a show for Nola. She was his and to stay away.

"I checked out the system, and everything looks good, no blind spots, alarms working...nothing else needs to be done. I need to go check in my hotel and then head to Victor's new office he-"

"What? You can't leave! You have to stay here with us. Guard the house, right" Riyah said.

"No, no, no, no! There is no need for me to stay here. The house is secured. I can come over first thing tomorrow when you need to leave and-"

"No!" Riyah said. "You stay here. Tone, make her stay."

She already had their itinerary for the week, and all she was supposed to do was stay close to Riyah and make sure her ditzy ass didn't get abducted again. There was no need to be in the house now that it was secure.

"Nola, would you mind? We have a spare room. Since you said no recording till we find out what's going on, there is no camera crew."

Gosh, darn it! Tone was still fly and she fell for that pretty face. And the distress in Riyah's voice.

"Okay!" she said with a stomp of her foot. "But act like I'm here, and don't do shit I don't wanta see or here. Capeesh?"

A/N: Let's see how fast Nola solves this case, if she's supposed to be so great at reading people.
