Lisa is waiting for Jennie to enter her office. Her meeting with the management committee ended quickly and she called her secretary to tell the woman.
It hadn't been easy denying her presence. It's only been a few days in the office, but almost all of his male employees, from entry level clerks to those who are about to retire, are doing something just to get noticed by the woman. And Jennie was so charming to everyone that even the girls wanted to be close to her.
"Sit down, Miss Kim." She ordered when the one she was waiting entered the room.
"Thank you." The woman answer was as formal as her tone before sitting down. Without preamble, she started the interview. "Luckily, the company's documentation is in order so this shouldn't take long. Just a few questions to clarify a few things."
Lisa doesn't speak. Se stared at the woman as she let her lead the conversation. Unconsciously she studied the changes in the woman. She still looked young. She would be twenty-six by now. Jennie still looks like a child because her skin has softened more from living in another country. She slimmed down, too, and her features are more defined. There are small signs of maturity on her face. Her cat like eyes for one seemed older. Sader?
Her movements have also changed. The gracefulness she remembered was still there in every movement but the movements were reduced. Whereas before the woman seemed like it couldn't be stopped in one place or something always needed to be looked at or explored, now her every action and nuance is more disciplined. It's like sitting in front of her now. Her Jennie would never sit as still as this woman in front of her. Her Jennie? She scolded herself. She was never her Jennie! It's just her delusion.
"Good. I only have about half an hour." That tone was more irritable than she intended.
Because of that, Jennie raised her eyes from the notes she was consulting. And with that sudden reaction, what she had been avoiding doing since entering the room happened, she looked into Lisa's eyes. And she was hurt by the impatience that she saw there.
When did she always have time for her?
"Lisa, is it okay if we go to the clubhouse first? I just want to get something."
"Sure."
"Are you sure? You're not doing anything?"
Playfully, the woman touched her chin. "Even if I was, I would always have time for you."
But now, they have to fit in thirty minutes because there is no time. She looked in the face of the woman she once loved. She could barely see it. Same doe eyes that she loved so much, same beautiful features but she couldn't recognize the look she was giving her.
A decision that distanced them and she was lost to her. Out of her life.
Why did I let you go, Lisa? I was so sure back then that I did the right thing. Now I don't know. I'm not sure of anything anymore. If I'm right, why does it hurt so bad after so long to see that you don't have time and smile for me.
"I'm sorry, Miss Manoban." Finally she spoke out loud. "I-I'm feeling not well. Perhaps, we could reset this interview. So that you're not under pressure anymore if you have something else to do. I will check with your secretary about your next availability."
Jennie didn't wait for the woman's answer, she immediately got up to leave the office. She doesn't know how her work will end when she becomes an emotional wreck every time she faces the owner of the company.
