Jennie's Aunt Sandara arrived from the States when she heard about her favorite niece's marriage plan. She is ready to help her. But what she met in Korea was not a forced into marriage but an excited young bride-to-be.
"Are you sure, Jennie, that you are going to get married? If not, I will bring you with me to the US. We will run away from your dictator father." She offered.
She laughed at her late mother's sister. That she appreciates her concern. But she had never heard of anything so silly. "Oh, Aunty, but I love Lisa so much."
Her aunt sighed. "Sweetie, think about it a thousand times. You used to say the same thing when you talked about Jungkook before."
"I know, I used to think it was really Jungkook. But now I know that I only felt hero worship for him all this time. Lisa is different."
She didn't know that her eyes grew dreamy when the name of her fiancé was mentioned but her aunt could see it clearly.
"Lisa makes me feel the way I have never felt before. Do you know that, Aunty? I've never felt this way about anybody. There are times when we're apart it's like.. I know it sounds silly because we've only known each other for about three months. But I felt the happiest and somehow more complete with her around. When we're apart, it's like something is missing from me. I never felt that way about Jungkook. Jungkook is like a goal that I have to achieve. But Lisa.. Aunty, I didn't know that I could love someone as much as I love her.
The old woman sighed. It makes her think of how young her niece is and how innocent she still is. Because she knows what really happened as to why her niece is getting married, she has one more thing she wants to know. "Does Lisa feel the same way? Does she love you too?"
Jennie smiled. "I am not sure. I hope so. But if she's not.. I.. I don't know, Aunty, but I can wait. I will wait."
How naive she was then to think that just because she loved someone, she would love her in return. She thought of that time, life would be perfect. Because everything was always given to her, it had been the only logical thing to believe in.
She would have continued to believe in that perfection if she hadn't heard that conversation, on the morning of her wedding.
The entire wedding entourage checked in at a five star hotel in France. At six in the morning, before everyone else woke up, she left her room to go to Lisa's room. She wants to be the first to greet the woman on their wedding day. The day that will begin many more days together. She has a gift for her.
Last night, they talked and Lisa told her that after they return from their honeymoon, they will start on their own. Except for the house gifted by the woman's parents and the money she have saved, they will no longer depend on their parents. They would have to start from scratch. At the same time as the wedding preparations, Lisa is studying the business venture she wants to enter. She knows she lacks capital. She overheard her dealings on the phone when she visited her future wife's office. She plans to apply for bank loans. It only postpones the start of dealings until after their honeymoon.
She has a surprised for Lisa. She knows that she will not receive help from her father but what she does not know is that she has properties and her own money. In the envelope she was holding at that time, were her lifetime savings, along with title deeds and country club shares worth millions of dollars, an inheritance from her grandparents. She will give all of that to Lisa, for their future together.
A room service waiter was coming out of her fiance's room when she approached the door, she didn't have to knock. She raised a finger to her lips to signal the hotel staff to be quiet as she entered the room.
Lisa's back faced her. She holds the cellphone to her ear while her other hand combs her hair.
Be still, my heart. Jennie said to herself just seeing the back of her fiancé. Lisa was just wearing a towel in her body and she looked as if she had just showered. She tiptoed towards her, smiling from ear to ear at her planned surprise.
"I loved you too, Nancy."
She stopped walking when she heard the woman say that. Last time it was Jungkook. And now, the woman she will marry in just a few hours. It was more painful this time. She felt as if her heart was breaking into a million fragments.
Lisa continue to speak. "But there is no point in this conversation, is there? It's over. I'm getting married today. Why are you asking if I want that or not? I have to marry her.."
She didn't finish listening to what the woman was saying. It is now clear everything to her. She was just fooling herself that there was something between them. Lisa loves someone else and she is just her obligation.. Someone she had to marry. All this time, she tried to forget that the real reason why Lisa will marry her was because of her father's threat.
She made a decision. She can't do this to Lisa. She had always been thought of as a selfish little brat but at that moment, she learned the meaning of letting go. It pains her to let go of the woman she really love but she will do it.
She looked at the papers in her hand, her gifts and she thought.. She could give Lisa something worth more than all the treasures she had. She will return to the woman what her father took from her.. Her right to choose whom to marry, her right to love someone else.
Her Aunt Sandara's room was the first place she went. It looked like she had just woken up when she opened the door. Just one look at her, she already knew that something was terribly wrong. She could barely breathe from crying and the only thing she understood from what she was saying was that she wanted to leave.
They quickly left the hotel to go to the airport.
With the visa and passport she was supposed to use for her honeymoon, she flew to America with her aunt. Most of the members of the wedding entourage had already left the hotel when Jennie's makeup artist called her father. The old man was late but they said he had been knocking on the woman's room for a long time. He even went back to the lobby to ask for her. He even went back to the lobby to ask for someone else to call because no one was opening the room. In the confusion of things, no one reported that the bride was no longer at the hotel when Lisa was already on her way to the church.
Everything happened nine years ago. Jennie had made peace with her father when he followed her to America. It was a month after the failed wedding. Although, she didn't say why she left she accepted that maybe it was for the better. She knew that the only thing that motivated his father's change of vision was the fact that he missed her.
The old man tells how Lisa was upset when she found out that she would no longer be coming to church. Her father did not know that she also tried to communicate with the woman once, but she did not receive an answer from her. The only thing she told the old man was that she decided not to return to Korea.
Years ago, only Rosé and Mr. Kim when he had not retired was her only connection to the country she left behind. Because of her plea, neither of them even once mentioned anything related to the woman she was supposed to marry. It was not bitterness that motivated her to that request but the fact that she might not be able to move on.
And now, in just a few minutes, the plane is about to land at Incheon International Airport. She couldn't help but think about the question that had been bothering her every now and then for the past nine years.
Was she wrong to leave?
She shivered involuntarily because the job that brought her back to Korea would put her directly in the path of the person she left behind, Lisa.
