Jean and Mikasa along with their daughter were dining at the dinner table when a servant came interrupting their family time. The servant whispered something in Jean's ear, Mikasa looked at them curiously taking s bite out of her meal to act as if she wasn't eavesdropping. Jean's face hardened, he looked angry as he stood up from the chair and walked away without saying a word to Mikasa. Mikasa, surprised by Jean's sudden change of mood ran after him.
"What is it Jean.? Why are you so worked up?"
He sighed as he plopped himself on the sofa.
"Mikasa. I've been notified by her imperial majesty that there is an uprising and they're causing havoc, she's waiting on my order for us to take them down." He grabbed his face with his hands in a distraught manner.
"Meaning that-"
"It's a big one, a rebel group and it seems we may have to declare some type of war against them. I'll have to leave." Jean got up and walked towards Mikasa as he spoke all this to her.
"Must you go, Jean? I'm willing to fight alongside you-" She was quickly cut off
"No Mikasa you mustn't. No matter how strong you are I'm not willing to put you in danger. Besides, if anything goes wrong I don't want Athena to be left alone, so stay and take care of Athena"
Mikasa looked at him with worry written all over her face. Jean had never thought he would see Mikasa in that state, and him out of all people caused her to be like that? He reached out for her and caressed her face.
"Don't worry about me, Mika. Aside, from my dashing looks I'm good at dodging dangers."
Her worried face wore off , she snickered and rolled her eyes at him. But the light mood soon went back to an dampened atmosphere. Jean didn't want to ever leave Mikasa and his daughter but he couldn't ignore the duties he had as commander.
"Tell me, you will be alright. Tell me." Mikasa for some reason felt uneasy about the departure of Jean. She looked at him foe reassurance.
"I will I promise Mikasa.. I've always returned to you haven't I? This time won't be any different."
With that they shared a long embrace.
The next day came, and Jean prepared himself to set off to the location where the conflict was. Mikasa helped himself, putting on his attire all the while it was silent between the both of them. Jean could see Mikasa wasn't happy of the idea of his leave when she's quiet it usually meant she was pissed. They went down stairs, and Mikasa, Athena and Jean's mother stood by the entrance of their home.
It was time they bid him farewell. Jean's mother hugged him tightly, tears already streaming down her face. She stepped away allowing Mikasa to face Jean. Jean felt emotional, his firm face he tried putting up began to falter. Seeing his beloved wife and daughter, he didn't want to let them go. He felt so pathetic and cowardly for not allowing Mikasa to come with him but he couldn't bring himself to, he felt selfish for making that decision but he did it for them. To protect them to keep them safely away from harm at a cost of his own time.
"I'm a coward." Jean suddenly said and Mikasa was left stunned by his words.
"Your not Jean, I understand why you made such difficult decisions." Mikasa cupped his cheek with her hand all the while holding their daughter.
"Your my man. you're not just a commander, a mindless soldier your a human with a heart." she pressed her hand against his chest indicating he was not a man with a title but a man with something precious as a family by his side.
"Most importantly you're a father so promise me you will return " She looked at him with warmth in her eyes. Tears streamed from jean's stiff face, he leaned in kissing Mikasa on the cheek before glancing down at his daughter one last time and gave her a kiss as well.
