"People, keep on learnin'
Soldiers, keep on warrin'
The world, keep on turnin'
Cause' it won't be too long" ~
Red Hot Chilli PeppersBEING RESPONSIBLE WAS difficult. Gwen thought that by going back to school, she was doing herself a favour, but ending up in the principals office didn't feel very responsible. If anything, she would have rather gone with Peter onto the ferry, but in the long run, this was the only option.
"Gwendolyn? Are you listening?" The headteacher asked, curious as to why she hadn't spoken or averted her gaze in the past five minutes.
"Huh? I mean, yeah, of course." She rephrased, hoping he didn't catch her stutter.
"I'll ask you again, why were you skipping school?"
"I wasn't skipping, I promise." Gwen lied. "It's just, ever since what happened in Washington, I guess I've been really tense, paranoid." She hoped he bought her excuse, petty on her behalf. "I guess I just needed a break, I didn't realise I'd been gone for so long."
"I see." The educator commented. "Well, unfortunately, you'll have a detention. However, we do have a school counsellor you can visit, just in case you plan on taking a walk again."
"Thank you, Principle Morita, and I'm so sorry." It was partly true, and Gwen was most grateful that he hadn't told her parents, her reputation granted her the gift of explaining her detention. Along came more lies.
"Run along, if you don't hurry then you'll miss your lunch." Mr Morita instructed and allowed the blonde to finally meet back with her friends. However, even given the distraction, Gwen couldn't shake the terrible feeling that she'd done something wrong by leaving Peter. He was Spider-Man, but even he had limits.
That's when she received a phone call. From Tony Stark.
"Hello?" She questioned the caller
"Where is your web-crawling boyfriend?" Tony instantly asked, getting straight to the point.
"I'm fine thank you." The girl rolled her eyes.
"No." Tony shut down. "Don't sass me Casper. I need to know where he is."
"Staten Island Ferry. It left half an hour ago." She informed, not mentioning her part in the situation.
"And you aren't with him because..." The man wondered.
"Because I'm a responsible crime-fighter, who still managed to get a detention." She admitted. "We skipped school, and I decided I didn't want my dad killing me."
"Wow, I don't know whether to be proud or confused. Great job in Washington by the way." He continued to speak.
"Um, thanks?"
"Unfortunately, I have to deal with the other kid, again. Don't worry, you'll see his screw up on the news, didn't miss out in too much." He briefly explained. "Enjoy your day, looks like you'll be crime-fighting on your own for a while."
"Wait? What?" She asked, but the caller had already hung up, leaving Gwen feeling even more guilty. She needed to speak to Peter, potentially revealing her identity and hope that it wouldn't impact the friendship they shared. However, was she really ready to tell him she was Ghost-Spider? How would she even start the conversation? 'Hi, I know you're Spider-Man, but it's ok because I'm Ghost-Spider.' Just thinking about it made her feel stupid.
"Gwen?" Gloria asked. "The hell were you? I was looking everywhere."
"Oh, I was in the principals office, I got detention, so, no band practice tonight." She spoke.
"Detention? What happened to you? When did you become a delinquent?" The girl persisted, which forced Gwen to come up with another lie.
"I don't wanna talk about it, a little embarrassing." She answered.
"Fine by me." Gloria stated, thinking of a way to possibly cheer Gwen up. "Well, at least you still get to come to homecoming. What are you planning on wearing?"
"Not sure yet. What about you?" The blonde countered as her way of looking for inspiration, she'd been far too busy to even consider homecoming outfits.
"Well, me and Jason are going to match, you know? His tie will match my dress, it'll be perfect." She bragged. "Please tell me you managed to get yourself a date."
That was the moment when Gwen's face moulded into a mixture of awkwardness and feigned happiness, an expression she reserved for moments like these. "About that..." She trailed off. "I've been a little busy lately, and I haven't really had the opportunity to-"
"Gwendolyn Maxine Stacy!" Gloria yelled. "You've had boys ask you out all week, you've just either ignored or turned them down, this is on you." The teen scolded. "But don't worry, I've got you covered. A few guys messaged me asking for your number, so there's still options."
"Please, you call those guys options? They don't even have the balls to ask me for my number, with that attitude, they're not gonna make it out alive through the 'dad talk'. Why can't I just ask one of my guy friends?"
"Well, traditionally, the guy asks the girl." Gloria said, hoping she could change Gwen's mind, truthfully, she didn't want Gwen to go to homecoming with one of the nerds from her classes.
"Screw tradition. Who says I even need a date, I'll just third wheel you, like always. Now, that's a tradition I can get on board with." Gwen attempted to joke, but it was probably her safer option.
"One of these days you'll be a normal teenager, hopefully soon." Gloria trailed off, figuring it was Gwen's problem. Which it was, however she thought the blonde could use her help every now and again.
On the other hand, Gwen felt the opposite. She had enough on her plate, making Gloria the bearer of bad news, adding even more problems for her to face, problems she didn't have time for. Especially since Stark gave her that message, she'll be fighting crime alone. But what did he mean?
"Hello it's me Betty." A voice was heard from the small TVs centred in the corridors.
"And me Jason." A male voice added. "We're coming to you live, with breaking news."
"Today, at 11:30 am, a Staten Island Ferry was caught in a catastrophic accident, but when our saviour Spider-Man was asked to help, he failed, drastically." The blonde explained.
"Oh shit." Gwen muttered, she knew leaving him was a bad idea, terrible.
"Luckily, Iron-Man made it just in time to save the day, no lives were lost during this incident. Thank you Iron-man." Betty continued.
Gwen was torn, she'd left Spider-Man alone and that was her fault, perhaps if she stayed with him, they could've saved the ferry or caught the criminals. Alternatively, she did tell Tony Peter's whereabouts, which did happen to save his skin, but at what cost? 'What am I supposed to do now?' She kept asking herself in confusion, maybe it would have been more responsible to stay with Peter.
