Don't we all agree that we eagerly wait for the next chapter/episode when the previous one ends with a little suspense? That ending with suspense is called a cliffhanger. In other words, a cliffhanger is a device used in fiction wherein a chapter ends with an unresolved question or idea.

How do we write a cliffhanger that'll keep readers hooked to the book?

🖋 Narrate from an unaware character's perspective: Not all characters are aware of all things happening in the story. Try narrating the story from the perspective of a character who is yet to discover key information.

🖋 Make the readers live the character: A reader visualizes the character and feels their emotions. So, ensure you try your best to describe the character's emotions in each scene. This will get the readers involved too, especially when there's suspense lurking around.

🖋 Do not end the chapter with a detailed description: Divulging too much information at the end of a chapter could help the readers guess the future course of the story. So, keep the end of each chapter concise.

🖋 Focus on the protagonist: While creating suspense around a side character generates interest, focusing on creating suspense around the main character is definitely going to make your readers want to know more sooner.

🖋 Leave the scene incomplete: If your chapter ends with an interesting scene, move the last few paragraphs to the next chapter to leave the readers wanting for more!

🖋 Bring in a plot twist: A good plot twist at the end of a chapter is going to keep your readers guessing about what's going to happen next. What better way to keep the readers hooked to the story?

🖋 Use flashbacks: You can end the chapter with your protagonist recalling a past incident that revolves around your current plot. Just don't reveal why the character is thinking about the past now!

Hope these tips help you write an enthralling cliffhanger that'll keep your readers hooked to your book!
