🎶: 'brutal' by Olivia Rodrigo
High school.
Whenever people think of those two words, most of them will probably imagine it the way movies depict and present it.
The time of romance, the time of experience, and most importantly, the time of your life. After all, you're just one step away from entering college, and you're already beginning to open new doors to the big life.
It sounds wonderful, which is why, if you ask anyone on the streets who aren't in high school yet, teens are excited to attend high school.
Movies unfortunately forgot to mention the real deal with high school.
High school is a literal war zone.
If you're on people's bad side, then your four years of being a high school student will most likely be hell.
And moreover, the academic stress from high school?
It'll keep you up all night, literally.
And a group of five boys are experiencing one crisis after the next while being in high school.
First up, we got Yeonjun. He's a high school senior that's actually already close to 20 (because he had to repeat a grade or two due to his academic scores), and was always open about his sexuality and personality.
And of course, because some small minded people don't understand that it's fawking 2019 and being queer ain't a crime, he keeps on being teased for being feminine.
In his defense, Yeonjun replied saying he likes his pink hair, and that crop tops are a lot more comfortable than tight shirts that don't let him breathe. But who'd listen?
Obviously, this made Yeonjun extremely insecure, especially since also at his job people make fun of him. Which is why he wants to quit, but sadly he can't since he'd disappoint his family.
Then you got Taehyun, sick of 17. He's stuck in sophomore year like his best friend for the second time already, maybe because he's mourning about his teenage dream that never came to life.
If he had ten won for every time people tell him he should enjoy his youth, he'd have enough money to pay for all the tissues he's wasted bawling into, and not have it go onto his parents' bill.
So many people also make fun of his stern yet childish self, and because Taehyun never sticks up for himself, this teasing always continues. Which of course made Taehyun extremely nervous going to school. Instead of trying to fight back, his cowardly self just does nothing except just desperately wishing that people would like him more in one way or the next.
Remember that best friend of Taehyun's? That's Hueningkai. If hard-working were personified into someone, it'd definitely be him. He spends more time in school trying to prove himself to everyone more than he spends time with his friends.
Sadly, he knows about that reality. Of course he's upset that all of his efforts are never appreciated by anyone around him (except maybe his friends). So no wonder that on the rare times he hangs out with Taehyun, he whines how he wants to disappear from the world, and that he doesn't get why high school and teenage life are considered as the golden years.
To which Taehyun only replied "it's brutal out here, my friend".
You thought we were already done with how miserable high school life can get?
Ohhhh no, we still have the last two members of this little five-member friend group, and they probably, most likely, represent every other high school student that you'd meet in the hallway.
Next up we have Soobin. He feels extremely unwanted in his class, and that feeling was only fueled by the fact that he's also perceived as socially awkward and rude, when that's not even the truth, and strangely he enjoys being with people who dislike him. Probably the reason why only has two real friends (Yeonjun and Beomgyu and technically also Taehyun and Hueningkai, but he's not super close with them).
Besides that, Soobin has quite the hobby of making music and writing songs, but unfortunately, he's in an artist's block every other day. That is why his insecurities have convinced him that he ain't cool or smart, and that doubt only grows because he is currently failing in passing his driver lessons, specifically, in parallel parking.
All I did was try my best
This the kind of thanks I get?
Unrelentlessly upsetThey say these are the golden years
But I wish I could disappear
Ego crush is so severeGod, it's brutal out here
Oh dear lord, if any psychologist in the area would take a good look at this montage of emotions from five different boys, they'd probably get a massive headache on the amount of needed therapy sessions for each of them.
Well, imagine how the boys must be feeling— oh wait, we still have one final boy to reveal, who probably lives the life that is completely opposite of what these shitty and totally cliché high school movies talk about.
Which one you may ask?
Well, the romantic movies about finding a true love in high school (and yes, I'm looking at High School Musical in particular).
Here we have Beomgyu. To put it simply, he's extremely heartbroken and also has a completely broken ego cuz of a pretty bad and toxic ex that he met when he was an innocent freshman year student.
He's been dealing with heartbreak for the majority of his high school life, which is probably why he doesn't know what to do in life anymore because it's just far too exhausting, and where to start moving from this bullshit.
And yeah, there you have it: high school life summarized through five different boys.
