🎶: '1 step forward, 3 steps back' by Olivia Rodrigo
How to put this simply?
Hueningkai is stuck in a toxic relationship.
There we go, the simple answer has been said.
The reason behind it is a little more complicated, or maybe it's just Kai's boyfriend making things harder to understand.
Kai feels pressured being with Yeonjun, his boyfriend of almost two years.
This toxic behavior has been around for nearly a year, and Kai had no idea how it happened.
All he remembers was the day when Yeonjun screamed at him for no reason.
Kai had called him that day, asking him how he was doing since Yeonjun had just come back from his trip to America, and they hadn't been able to keep in touch recently.
His voice showed nothing but curiosity and calmness, like how his voice usually sounded.
But somehow, he struck one of Yeonjun's nerves, and the call ended up in Yeonjun screaming at Kai for waking him up, not letting him wear the jet lag off, and moreover, that he didn't call him in the afternoon.
Did Kai cry?
Obviously; do you expect him to be okay with someone he loves yelling at him for stupid reasons?
Unfortunately, Yeonjun's behavior started to change and eventually got worse with every passing day.
Kai would do nothing and Yeonjun would still scream and holler at him for making little mistakes.
Most of the time, he always blamed him for something that wasn't right, like the cooked meals, the position of pillows on their bed, and even the misplacement of their toothbrushes.
And with this excessively displayed behavior, it started to mess with Kai's head and deteriorate his mental health.
He was beginning to doubt himself more and more every day. He was doubting that he had any good qualities in him, and that he was just an annoying scum, like how Yeonjun has been calling him these days.
Quite the replacement for words such as 'You're so pretty baby' or 'that was a good one; god you're so funny'.
Why hasn't Kai broken up with him yet after all of this?
Well, because this behavior that Yeonjun displayed has its phases.
On some days, he acts just like his usual self: cheerful, quirky, loving, and gives Kai the best hugs.
It was like the old times, and Kai believed that they were finally making some progress, and that this all may end one day.
But then there are the days when he relapses into this toxic behavior, and starts getting angry over anything, or takes it too far by shaming Kai about something that he had no control over.
And then they were back to square one.
Whenever the two laid in bed together, Yeonjun snoring away on the left side, Kai was awake and restless on the right side, thinking over everything that has been going on these days.
He just couldn't understand what was going on.
Did Yeonjun hate him?
Did he still love him?
He didn't get it, and there was nothing to point at a clue that could tell him what was going on with Yeonjun.
But at the same time, and maybe it's due to Kai being so used to this toxic, manipulative and unjust behavior the past few months, he found Yeonjun's down days quite... exciting, if he must be brutally honest.
Why the heck would he say that?
Who in all laws of nature would romanticize destructive manners?
Well, Kai often wondered which type of lover he would get every morning when he woke up.
Was Yeonjun going to be as sweet as ever and walk with him arm in arm to the door, or will he send Kai on his own to their house crying, wanting to be on his own?
Who knows?
It's one step forward and three steps back
I'm the love of your life until I make you mad
It's always one step forward and three steps back
Do you love me, want me, hate me?
Boy, I don't understandKai let it go on for a long time.
Until the day that Yeonjun slapped him on the face.
It wasn't just a quick clap on the face; Yeonjun smacked his hand across his cheek, so that it left a red mark, and on purpose.
Before Yeonjun could apologize, snapping out of it, Kai was already grabbing his keys and running away.
To where?
The one place he can always go to if he needs help.
Lea, his older sister, let Kai sob on her shoulder while Bahiyyih, his younger sister, handed him one of his old plushies.
"Don't ever go back there, okay?" Lea said.
"I need to... Yeonjun will be furious otherwise," Kai mumbled.
"I don't care, Kai. No one is allowed to hurt my little brother, both mentally and physically!"
"We'll go over there tomorrow and get your stuff, okay? Until then, just stay here and rest," Bahiyyih added.
Kai hung his head low.
He couldn't believe that his and Yeonjun's once gloriously perfect relationship turned into this mess.
And up to this day, he still has no idea what caused it.
Did he do something wrong? Did he say something that upset Yeonjun? Did he... did he accidentally break something valuable to him? Or did his mere existence rile his boyfriend up to the point love became hate?
Whatever it was, Kai wouldn't know.
"... and as soon as we get your stuff, I'm calling the police on him," Lea concluded.
Kai snapped his head up.
"What?! No!"
"Kai, what?! Are you seriously gonna let that asshole live peacefully?! He hurt you, Kai, his own partner! You're just barely 18–"
"I know! B-But... p-please don't do that."
"Why?" Bahiyyih questioned, her voice oozing disbelief.
Kai sighed.
"Because... you guys can call me crazy for this."
His sisters peered at him.
"What?"
The black haired boy sighed.
"I still love him."
"I'm so sorry Kai. I should've been honest about my condition with you instead of harming you. I'm sorry."
