Soft pitter-patters of rain gently hit the windshield of the car as it drove down the once-paved road which was now cracked and bumpy. She tried to keep the vehicle steady while at the same time, checking for something that might help. And so far, she's come up empty. Every car that's been parked here since last week got in the way, blocking every exit she could think of. It frustrated her. Why couldn't they have just left instead? It would have been safer outside Raccoon City had they not been so captivated by their own fear.
Weaving in-and-out through the road was like going through a tricky maze. Everywhere that she turned—car or not—had been bupkis.
"Ugh, fucking hell," Kelly muttered to herself.
Static came out of thin air, grasping the detective's attention. Her free hand patted the empty passenger seat, using her instincts to look for it instead of her eyes.
"Kelly?"
When she wouldn't answer right away, the person on the other end of the talkie grew panicked. After finding it on the floor, she brought the black bar to her lips, pressing the button to speak after the voice screamed at her.
"Relax. I'm alright," Kelly said, gluing her eyes on the road once more.
"Dammit, Steinbeck. Answer me when I'm calling you!"
She shrugged, although he couldn't see her body language. "My cell phone died. I'm sorry."
Silence lingered on the other end. She pictured the officer pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration, but regaining control of himself and spoke again.
"You know, I'm a little surprised you took the keys to the cruiser without Marvin's approval."
Kelly smiled. "Well, would he have said yes if I had asked?"
The man chuckled on the other end. "Anyway, how are things going in your area?"
"Not good. Everything is blocked. The trains have taken off. The highways are blown into smithereens. There's not a single place that could potentially be a way out."
"Yeah, that's what I figured."
She shook her head, clicking the button again. "I know, but... but there's something telling me there is a way out somewhere."
Taking her eyes off the road briefly, Kelly adjusted the rearview mirror for a better angle. The humanoid zombies were caught in the reflection, creating horrifying silhouettes as they staggered after the car driving further down the road. Dimly lit lights varied from lampposts and stop lights, and, if they're still working, headlights from automobiles. It created a lot of dark, spectacle colors that reminded her of vivid fever dreams from her childhood.
