________
On the evening of 10 May 1882, the Fryes' friend was studying a strange document that the Rooks had brought back. The Templars were on the trail of another fragment of Eden following an expedition to the Middle East, and the Brotherhood had heard about it. It was necessary to be careful. This coded document, which appeared to be complex to decode, had been stolen during a transfer of merchandise and was certainly about this mysterious ancient object. Victoria did not really like to study them, and did not want to approach them. But studying the documents about these objects, dangerous in the wrong hands, was necessary. It was essential to know their capacity, and the after-effects they could leave, in order to be better prepared.
Tired of trying to decrypt lines for a long hour without looking up, she leaned back in her chair and rubbed her eyes. If only Evie were here... After a deep sigh, she looked down at the bottle of beer beside the inkwell. She took the bottle, light, and finished the bottom before getting back to work. She felt that she was going to have a boring night. But no sooner had she resumed decoding the document, than she heard the door to her flat open after she heard the lock mechanism being released. She looked up, her eyes narrowed. She wasn't expecting any visitors tonight, and her French friend wasn't coming to London until tomorrow morning. And anyway, she was supposed to be the one to pick him up at the station.
When she turned her face towards the corridor, she saw a figure she knew well. A long coat, a red scarf, a top hat. As soon as she recognised him, she smiled. There was no way anyone would know about the duplicate keys in one of the porch steps. It was a pleasant surprise to see the man who had been her friend, her lover and at the same time one of her mentors.
"Good evening, Miss Reid," he smiled before entering the living room to join her.
"Mister Frye, what a surprise," she replied, rising to her feet. "To what do I owe such a late visit?"
"I was just going out for a breath of fresh air, and as I passed by I thought I'd have a beer. (he stopped in front of her) Then I thought, what would a beer be without the company of an old friend?"
The proximity made the young woman look down, and her gaze unfortunately fell on the secretary. She remembered that she had to find out what was in the document. Her smile and good mood disappeared from her face, giving place to regret and resignation. She faced him again and said:
"I'm sorry, Jacob. But one of your Rooks got hold of this brainteaser when he broke into a warehouse in Birmingham, and I can't be distracted. Maybe it's this artifact of Ed..."
Jacob interrupted her by raising his hand, not wishing to hear any more.
"Keep it up and you'll end up obsessing over these things like my sister," he warned.
This made the thirty-something woman half smile. Her studies on the fragments of Eden had long been her company in Jacob's absence, though she had managed to have another man in her life. At this thought, her half-smile disappeared. She sighed.
"Vic, you've been sitting on this document for days without making any progress. You watch over the city at the same time. And on the side, you're teaching several Assassins. And I know you've been missing your sons since you came back to London last month."
She looked up at her former mentor. The mention of her children had caught her attention. They were being raised by her now dead husband's parents. She wanted them to grow up away from the Brotherhood and its dangers since their father's death. And Jacob was the only one in the know.
