chapter six:
burned bridges
─────────────────

RHAENYRA WAS angered by her former paramour. After all this time, how had he found out about their daughter now? None of made sense to the heir as they all sat together in her chambers. With the young princess requesting for her mother to allow her to tour Dorne as a gift for her fifteenth name day. "I do not see why I cannot go whereas you were able to at my age," Muttered Aelanys who stood closer to her true father Rhonyn. Rhaenyra's eyes burned into his until she had to look away only seeing her daughter in his eyes.

"I was two years older than you now when I toured Dorne," Rhaenyra corrected.

Laenor couldn't help himself eye the Dayne knight. He motioned his lips downward impressed by his wife's taste. As he even found himself attracted to the star knight. "Well wife mayhaps it could be good for-" The heir cut off the future king consort rather quickly. "You do not get a say in this." Laenor frowned at her words, "She is just as much your child as she is mine. Blood or not." Rhonyn scoffed at their debacle, "It seem the heir does not acknowledge any other parent to the children other than herself. Perhaps she should have reproduced on her own if that is the situation." Laenor raised his brows knowing his wife would not be keen on the knight's comment. Which he would be right as Rhaenyra glowered toward him. "You know as anyone my family is most welcoming. Aelanys would be under my care and protection," Rhonyn added. The heir scoffed, "So, I should just allow my daughter and heir to tour Dorne with only one man's protection?"

To this the sword of the morning let out a wry laugh, "Princess, I am not just any man, I am the sword of the morning, wielder of Dawn. Did you skip over your lessons of what that means?"

"Yes you are a great knight appointed by your family," Rhaenyra rolled her eyes at his comment.

"There are many trials one must undergo to hold such a great title. If I truly wished to I could blindly fight off five armed men with much ease. As I have proved through said trials."

This was not something anyone could deny. Even after the tourneys and jousting the seven kingdoms were proclaiming Rhonyn Dayne the greatest knight to ever live.

"Mother, I have never begrudged you nor father for making me...illegitimate. I have never questioned or judged you. All I ask is a chance to know my true father," Aelanys looked into her mother's eyes begging for her to say yes. Rhaenyra finally realized how her father felt when she herself requested to tour around the kingdoms. As a mother she did not want to lose one of her children. Being future queen she would not want to lose an heir. Sure, she knew the boys would continue her succession but, Aelanys had been perfect for the role. Both she and her daughter spent many years with the king training to rule. Her daughter had more sense of unity and peace compared to her boys.
Yet, Rhaenyra knew her daughter was right. Out of all her children Aelanys never questioned her nor looked at her any differently. "We shall think on this," Laenor answered to which his wife nodded with a sigh. "Thank you mother, father," Aelanys nodded to them both taking a bow before leaving. The last thing she saw was Rhonyn taking a seat in front of her parents before the chamber doors closed.
