chapter fourteen:
vexing woman
─────────────────BOTH PRINCE AND PRINCESS, were taken by handmaids to prepare for the bedding ceremony. Aelanys could swear to the old gods and new her handmaids intentions were to scrub her skin from her flesh. They roughly scoured every crevice of her body trying to make haste for the bedding ceremony.
Aemond on the other hand, was savoring his few last hours of peace to himself. With most of the handmaids fearing the one-eyed prince it did not take much for him to send them away after his bath was prepared.
Maester Mellos even by his chambers by order of the king, to offer a special tea to ensure the bedding ceremony would be successful. Aemond could have laughed in the old man's face but, knew better than to reject something from the king. He took the tea and begrudgingly gave a courteous nod at the old maester who did not once meet his eye. Aemond presumed his scar was a symbol of the old man's failure seeing how horrific the scar now was. With a swift nod, the maester was on his way after delivering a tea Aemond did not intend to drink.
He poured the entire contents within the tea pot into his fireplace with a scoff before removing his clothes and soaking into his scalding hot eucalyptus bath. The sweet calming smell of the eucalyptus caused his body to finally relax from his usual rigid posture. His thoughts clouding with Aelanys and how he only wished for the night to be done with. Aemond tried to scrub away his thoughts by cleansing himself with the bathing gels and soaps the maids provided. Vibrant fresh aromas of bergamot, invigorated with juniper, black pepper, and cederwood filled the room as he tried to scour his thoughts away. He tried to focus on the fresh woodsy scents rather than the thoughts surrounding his bride. As he washed away all the bubbles and foamed up gel from his hair and body a gentle knock echoed throughout his chambers.
His eye flickered closed for a moment as annoyance filled his mind. Aemond wanted nothing more than to continue soaking in his now lukewarm bath.
Nonetheless, he finished his bathing routine by rinsing his face with a cleanser before getting out and drying himself off. Lazily, he only grabbed a robe not caring to be fully dressed to open his chamber door. "Brother," Helaena's soft voice surprised him as she was the last person he'd expect to visit him on this grand night. Aemond moved aside to allow her in and she took her place on the small chaise in his chambers. He quirked an eyebrow at her, his expression questioning why she'd pay him a visit before his bedding ceremony.
"I thought you might find comfort in me helping you prepare," She broke the silence upon recognizing his confusion. He noticed today seemed to be one of her better days. The type of day where she did not speak in confusing riddles and could pick up on social gestures.
