Chapter 41
*outside the cabin*
Demobats flew in the air a mile or so from the barrier, some gathered in huddled groups on the ground eating corpses of animals. They didn't appear to be close enough to see those that left the cabin to patrol the perimeter but that wasn't much comfort.
Joyce had chosen a rifle and decided to stay on the porch and keep an eye out in case anything got close enough to go inside.
Murray who wielded a rifle of his own took those that preferred ranged weapons: Nancy, Jonathan and Lucas with rifles and Robin who'd taken to using a crossbow. They split into two groups so they could each man the corners of the perimeter, making sure they were still within sight of the other teams.
Jim, carrying a flamethrower and healthy supply of Molotov's had those that were more suited for Melee combat for his own group: Argyle and Steve, He'd given a set of machete's to Steve who currently swung them about experimentally, clearly delighted at the balance.
Argyle had worked with Jim in the past few days to set up traps that he could trigger with a golf club if anything tried to attack on foot along the perimeter, so he currently wielded a nine iron alongside a belt of smoke grenades to provide cover for himself or any that needed it.
*inside the cabin*
The fire in the fireplace crackling and the flicker of candlelight was the only light in the living room per my instructions as electricity would just pull focus.
Will had started to smudge the sage, then added a bundle of rosemary to smudge it as well at my insistence. "Good work Will, the rosemary adds protection and promotes mental powers, it'l help boost mine and El's abilities."
Dustin and Mike worked together bundling the vervain with the belladonna and the other herbs before tying them to the candles and then building a ring of crystals around us each one alongside the candles.
Eleven had settled on the floor in front of the fireplace using the crackling sound it gave as her white noise to help her travel into the void.
At my insistence Wayne had settled across from both Eddie and I inside the circle, the others were confused until I explained why, "Uncle Wayne is going to be describing intricate work I need him safe." I didn't tell them that I was also afraid that he could be used against me if he wasn't safe within the bubble of energy the circle was turning into.
Once the candles were all anointed with the herbs I pulled on both their energy and chanted to summon my barrier before channeling the barrier directly into the crystals making them glow along with the candles. Dustin and Will watched intently as they sat outside the circle; Mike was with Eleven who had already gone into the void to watch things from there.
Squeezing Eddie's hand drawing from his strength I grinned as he kissed my head reminding me that he was there, that I had this.
Nodding at Wayne "we're doing the right side first.." I closed my eyes and began to focus drawing on my ribbon of energy and aiming it onto the worst wound, the one on my right shoulder.
Wayne began, being as descriptive as he could. "The one on the right shoulder went between your scapula and ribs, it went through the muscle that goes along the top of that area, in the thin gaps between the fibers, cutting but not severing em entirely."
*in the void*
The room was bare except for the glowing bubble that expanded over Red, Eddie and Wayne, it was so thick she could barely see them; Eleven could see Dustin and Will sitting nearby watching and waiting, glancing behind her she smiled seeing Mike who she knew sat with her in a similar position to Red and Eddie, keeping her safe and giving her support.
