It was a warm day for early October, with the sun fully shining and a mild breeze rustling through the trees and castle. Various magical and non-magical animals scampered about in their everyday lives, not minding the hustle and bustle of the school. Students whizzed about through the halls of Hogwarts, running from place to place with arms full of books and gods know what else. It was noisy, that day, with the din of the passing students and the calamity of the wildlife, but no one seemed to mind much.

Within the inner Hogwarts courtyard, a particular group of friends sat under one of the three trees. They were idly pulling grass from beneath their feet as they attempted to study for an upcoming pop quiz. The three had their noses buried in books and were ignoring the other students walking around them.

Finally, the tallest of the group sat back and snapped his book shut. It startled the other two from where they had been reading.

"This is boring," James Potter stated as he shoved his Magical Drafts and Potions textbook into his bag.

Sirius looked up and Peter didn't even bother to acknowledge James. "You say that every time we have to study. Every. Time, mate."

James shrugged and laced his fingers behind his head. "'Cause it's true."

Sirius sneered playfully at him and looked back to his own potions book, a finger placed on the page to remind him where he had stopped reading. The silence between the three was filled with the shaking of tree leaves and it didn't last long since it seemed James's mind was running one-hundred miles per hour and he was clearly keen on sharing.

"Ok, come on," Sirius and Peter glanced up once more at James's voice. "I bet we can work out what our animagus forms will be. I'm dying to know."

Sirius, seemingly accepting that he wasn't going to get any more reading done, sat up from where he had been lying on his stomach and shut his book. "But that's the point, mate; we won't know until we actually manage to, you know, change forms."

James didn't even listen. "I mean, we know it's supposed to reflect who we are..." he trailed off into a thoughtful silence.

Peter gave an annoyed groan and rolled onto his back suddenly. "This is pointless, man."

James suddenly perked up against the tree he was leaning against, eyes wide and a mischievous smile curling at his lips. "Oi, Lily! I need to ask you a question!"

Said Gryffindor, who James had yelled at, looked up from where she had been walking through the open-air corridor and immediately frowned. She said something to the Hufflepuff walking beside her before they moved on and Lily leaned through one of the arches in the wall.

"What?!" She shouted back, an annoyed edge in her voice.

"Humour me," James began and Sirius scoffed. "-if I was an animal what would I be?!"

   Lily blinked. "A pig!"

She turned heel and walked away.

James's jaw hung open and Sirius snorted. Peter had sat up onto his elbows and was looking back and forth between James and where Lily had been standing, a shit-eating grin plastered on his face.

"Woah..." Peter muttered through his grin and Sirius wheezed.

"Damn, James. She didn't even have to think about that one-"

Sirius screeched and scrambled away from a poorly aimed punch.
