I know this isn't exactly how Amortentia works... hush

Sirius watched on with interest as Lily ground up a glittering moonstone and carefully measured out a singular teaspoon. The pearly white powder was ever so carefully sprinkled into her cauldron and resulted in a small mushroom cloud of pearlescent steam. Lily stepped away for a second to avoid being colour bombed before quickly stirring the bubbling potion three times.

Professor Slughorn watched over the other student's shoulders, a proud smile on his face. "Very good, Lily. Class, it is crucial that when brewing any sort of love potion you do not plop any powders in but rather sprinkle them."

A few students leaned over to scribble against parchment, Remus being one of them. Sirius simply continued to watch James, Lily's potions partner, grab three rose thorns and drop them into the potion one at a time. No physical changes happened but James took over stirring while Lily grabbed one perfectly round pearl and ground it up like she had the moonstone.

Yet again, Lily sprinkled the powder into the cauldron and let James stir it three more times. Nothing happened at first and the class seemed tense with anticipation. Lily almost immediately frowned and Sirius could tell she was wondering if she had done something incorrectly. Suddenly, the potion receded in the cauldron before bubbling up in one large dome which popped and released a huge pocket of pink steam. It swirled and twisted through the air, creating wispy hearts and patterns before the smell finally reached the class.

Sirius was nearly knocked back by the sudden heady scent, heavy and seductive and- His hand came up to clamp over their nose as they were assaulted with the scents of orange petals, warm wool sweaters, vanilla, cedarwood, pine trees after a storm, and freshly melted chocolate. It took every bit of self-control Sirius had to not immediately turn to gape at Remus, who was having very much the same reaction.

Lily also clamped a hand over her nose and immediately turned a stink eye to James. "Merlin, James!" Slughorn's eyebrows rose into his hairline at Lily's exclamation and the rest of the class immediately turned to look at them. "How long did you spend in the Three Broomsticks yesterday? All I can smell is cigars and rum on you! It's been driving me insane all class!"

Remus's eyes were wide and Sirius barely managed to muffle a snort of amusement.

James puffed up like an angry hippogriff and shoved a finger in Lily's face. "Me? I can't smell a damn thing over all that cinnamon and osmanthus! What'd you do, sneak into the kitchens last night for a hot toddy?"

Sirius was laughing hysterically into the sleeves of his robe as Remus watched on with a sort of horrified amusement, the way someone would watch a clumsy puppy fall down the stairs. "...Think we should tell them?"

"Absolutely not, this is too good."

Professor Slughorn could only shake his head in tired amusement as the potions class dissolved into roaring laughter.
