"Honestly, I don't know how you stand Potter and Black," Lily sighed as she walked shoulder-to-shoulder with Remus through the halls.
Lily had only recently become closely acquainted with Remus, after struggling through 4th-year Potions and finally being set up with a tutor by Slughorn during the 1st trimester. She was mad, at first, that Slughorn had set her up with a tutor that would take up even more of her precious free time, but she liked Remus more than she cared to admit.
The only downside? His annoying entourage of friends.
There were only three, so 'entourage' was a bit of a stretch, but boy howdy did they cause a ruckus. And one of them was even becoming infatuated with her attention; she had so tactfully managed to avoid James Potter for nearly four whole years and then boom! Her tutor is best friends with him and his two trouble making best mates.
"They're so... loud and angry," Lily huffed as she recalled the most recent incident; Sirius Black had exploded his batch of Kissing Concoction all over the students in front of them. "And they're such bad influences too!
Remus merely adjusted his grip on his books. "Actually, they're pretty harmless; quite funny too."
Lily resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Normally, she hated the idea that she was the one appearing snobbish; in fact, she quite enjoyed the good prank here or there. But something about the "Marauders" as the Gryffindors had begun calling Remus and his three idiotic friends, rubbed Lily the wrong way.
"Sounds like an excuse," she relented and Remus huffed a laugh. "I think they should grow up and start behaving like adults. And you shouldn't let them push you around."
He only hummed absentmindedly. "Right..."
"I like spending time with you," Lily offered and she noticed her hands had gone clammy, stupid nerves. "You're a good listener and you're nice. I say you're too good for them."
No response.
"Wait," Lily suddenly stopped in the middle of the hall, just shy of Lachlan the Lanky's statue. "-you wanted to talk with me for a reason, right?"
Remus stopped when he noticed his partner had and turned around, green eyes unfocused before he looked her in the eyes. "Nothing in particular."
Lily frowned. "...So you just walked with me so I could rant to you for a few minutes?"
"I enjoy your company," Remus shrugged.
Lily looked him straight in the eyes; wide and innocent and... completely unlike Remus. He was hiding something, one-hundred per cent.
"You're distracting me while Sirius and James do something stupid."
Remus jerked and looked at his wrist, which held no watch. "Oh, look at the time, I have to go. Nice speaking with you!"
He turned heel and walked away in a billow of black and red. Lily watched him go with a tired expression.
"I was wrong, they're all way too alike."
