Lily sat leisurely at an empty table in Hog's Head, fingers playing with the frayed pages of an old book as her finger idly stirred a phantom spoon through her hot butterbeer. The steam wafted around her fingers and enveloped her with the soft scent of cinnamon, caramel, and the warmth of butterscotch. There was a soft hum of chatter about the pub, a few other 6th and 7th-year students who had gotten out of class early and even a few witches and wizards who lived nearby.

It was nice to relax, to sit alone and not have to talk with anyone.

   "Lily."

The stirring in her cup stopped as she glanced up, so much for being alone. But she knew that voice and even the familiar pattern of his footsteps. She tilted her head as Remus, dressed down in a brown turtleneck and plaid pants, slid into the rickety chair across from her. She smiled at her friend as he sat down but he didn't return it. That worried her a bit.

"James loves you," Remus immediately started and Lily blinked at the abruptness.

He stared at her intently, fingers laced on the tabletop as he leaned forward a bit. His hair was loose, she idly noticed as she leaned back in her chair and regarded him curiously. Eventually, her hands returned to her book once more and she looked back down to the pages. She didn't feel like repeating this conversation yet again.

"So I've heard..." She ended up humming as she returned to her story.

Remus sighed. Clearly, he didn't want that answer. "Will you go out with him?"

Lily's eyes glanced up and stared at a knotted spot on the wood table as she processed Remus's words yet again. "No."

She wasn't going to date a guy who didn't even have the balls to properly ask her himself. Well, he'd asked her before but this was just low. Of course, James would chicken out and send Remus; he probably asked Sirius too but no doubt they responded by either laughing or ignoring him.

Remus shifted in his seat and leaned closer to her. "Lily, please. I'm begging you-"

"Nope, not gonna happen," Lily interrupted, even if she was reeling at the fact that Remus of all people was begging her to date his walnut of a best friend.

"You don't understand what you're doing!"

She was surprised to hear a well-hidden twinge of desperation in his voice. What in the world-?

"Listen, I'm not agreeing to go on a date with the arguably most arrogant Gryffindor at school-"

"You don't understand," he reached out and grabbed onto her wrist. "-he's holding my chocolate captive until I get you to agree, please!"

She stared at him with wide eyes before barking out a loud, surprised laugh.
