Remus stared dejectedly at the dusty painting on the table before him. He had done so much; decoding charms and barriers and hexes on the painting of his charms class project and this is what had him stumped. A bit of French on the frame of the painting that he could not, for the life of him, translate. Charms were forbidden to aid in knowing what it said and he couldn't find anything like the saying in any of the books he had stacked at his feet.

Lily looked over his shoulder helplessly, trying to help Remus decode the frame but her efforts fell short as well. "I have no idea what that says"

Remus merely sighed and pushed his hair away from his forehead, pinching the bridge of his nose. "This might be what finally drives me mad."

"What's gonna drive you mad, Moony?" A familiar voice spoke up behind them and they turned to find Sirius standing with a small stack of books.

"Oh, hi Padfoot," Lily greeted and Sirius nodded before looking back at Remus inquisitorially.

Remus rolled his eyes at the nicknames before moving aside from the table and gesturing to the painting. "Honestly, I have no idea what this says..."

He was ashamed to admit this to Sirius, someone who quite often complimented him for his ability to think through any problem. And yet this stupid little foreign saying had defeated him entirely.

Sirius raised both eyebrows and stepped forward, craning his neck to look at the frame. He read for a second before shrugging and Remus's shoulders dropped in defeat, knowing there was no hope for translating it-

"'The stars incline us, they do not guide us. Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.'"

Remus's mouth fell open slightly. Lily full-on squawked in surprise as the words on the frame de-scrambled and spelt out the exact words Sirius had just spoken. To their account, the dark-haired Gryffindor seemed rather nonchalant and began to walk away before Lily pulled him back by the hood of his robe.

"You can read French?" Remus asked, almost aghast in tone.

Sirius shrugged again but Lily butted in. "You can read?"

Remus's eyebrows rose at Lily's question. Lily only bit her lip to avoid barking out a laugh.

Sirius's face fell into an unamused sneer. "That's cold, Evans."
