chapter zero

"I LOVE YOU," Finney spoke, his voice soft as he looked at the girl and she knew it was true. She could tell from his eyes.

His eyes always drew Ava in, they held so much love and comfort that could make even the most paranoid of people feel safe.

"I love you too."

THERE ARE MANY WORDS in the English dictionary that could describe Ava Laurens. Some, but not limited to, are: kind-hearted, patient, friendly, loving, charming, loveable and many many more.

These were words that constantly surrounded the girl daily, from small whispers in the corridors from her peers to enthusiastic waves that turned into ten-minute conversations.

It was pretty easy to see that Ava Laurens was a very popular person in Denver. From her bright smile that always reached her eyes, to her blonde hair that flowed effortlessly with each movement.

Ava's morning routine when she walked into school would follow as normal, she'd go to her locker, she'd talk to a few of her friends, the bell would ring and she'd head to class.

But today was different, Ava didn't go to her locker to talk to her class friends, or head to lessons straight away. Instead, she went to look for a familiar brunette.

Jordan.

The girl's oldest friend. Her best friend.

AVA SIGHED as she scanned the crowds of students, searching for the brunette. This was deemed a very difficult task, especially when most people in Denver had brown hair.

"Are you looking for someone?" A voice said from beside her, she quickly turned her head. It was a brunette.

Although, the wrong brunette. "Sorry?" Ava asked, not quite hearing the girl the first time. The unknown brunette smiled, "I asked if you were looking for someone."

Ava made a face of understanding, "oh! Yes! I'm looking for someone, do you know anyone by the name of Jordan Richards?" The blonde asked the brunette girl.

The blonde watched as the younger girl thought for a moment before nodding, "I've heard of her, she normally fights Pinball Vance, right?" Ava nodded.

'Of course, that's how people remember her,' She thought to herself amusedly. She loved her friend but god was Jordan the definition of trouble.

"I saw her walk passed him but they didn't fight today," She explained, making Ava's eyebrows knit in confusion. That was strange, Hopper and Jordan usually fight.

Ava can't remember days when the two weren't fighting, whether it was verbal or physical. Her expression must've been funny as the younger girl in front of her chuckled.

"I know, I was shocked too!" The brunette smiled as Ava offered her another smile. Ava felt bad not knowing the name so she hoped that if she introduced herself, the girl would do the same.

"Oh, I've Ava by the way," The blonde smiled, earning a grin from the brunette.

She extended her hand, "I'm Gwen! It's nice to meet you." Ava took her hand delightedly.

"Gwen is such a pretty name," She complimented earning a bright smile from the brunette. "Gwen!" A voice from behind them called out.

It was a boy. A boy who looked very similar to Gwen, he was also a brunette. He jogged over but froze when he saw Ava, she sent him a sweet smile.

He smiled back. He had such a pretty smile.

It was a shame; Ava had never seen the boy, yet he seemed to stand out. "I'm Ava."

"Finney. Finney Blake," he spoke quietly, a small tremble in the boy's voice as though he hadn't expected the blonde to talk to him.

The bell rang signalling time for the first lesson and Ava sighed realising she still had her bags and books in her hand instead of her locker.

Gwen and Finney waved goodbye to the girl and she quickly manoeuvred her way through the now-empty hallways to her locker. She quickly unlocked her locker door and placed her books inside.

Someone behind her cleared their throat, she closed the locker and turned around. "Ms Laurens?" The councillor asked, her eyebrows raised in slight surprise.

"Oh, Ms Hello..." The blonde slightly trailed off, she wasn't trying to ditch per se, she just wanted to find Jordan but that attempt was in vain.

The woman in front of her gave a tight-lipped smile, "well, you must be off to class now, don't want to be late."

Ava nodded, clutching her book for the first period in her class. The blonde gave the woman a curt nod and was about to move out of the way before she was intercepted.

"Miss?"

"I need to write you a note! Don't want you in detention now," she smiled at Ava and quickly scribbled a note down. The blonde smiled and once again nodded, she said her goodbyes to the councillor once more and made her way to class.

Her white mary janes clicked against the polished marble floor of the school, she walked briskly to class to hopefully not be any later than she already is, even if she had a note.

She made her way to her first period and took a deep breath, she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and knocked.

After a few seconds, a muffled voice came from inside, "come in!"

Ava slowly opened the door, a soft smile on her lips, "oh miss Laurens, you're late."

"I apologise, I have a note," the blonde offered. The curly-haired English teacher walked forward and took the note off of her, she scanned the note before smiling.

"Very well, take a seat."
