chapter five
WHEN AVA GOT back from school, her house was empty. The lights had all been switched off and only a note on the fridge was left.
'Went shopping, be back soon
- love mum'
Ava sighed and shrugged her bag off of her shoulder, she pulled the note from the fridge and crumpled it up. She threw the paper into the bin and opened the fridge, getting a bottle of water.
The blonde glanced down to the floor where her bag lay, she reflected back on her day with a small smile as she remembered the fact that Finney returned her umbrella. In all honestly, she assumed that he would've taken it.
She grabbed her bag from the floor and walked through her house, her bottle of water still in the other hand. Ava made her way to her bedroom and dumped the bag's contents out.
It was a shock Ava never got homework detentions considering that a lot of them were barely readable because of how quickly she did them. Then again, what teacher ever read through the homework?
She sat on her bed, a small yawn escaping the blonde's lips. She glanced at the pile of paper and umbrella on her bed, 'i'll do it later,' The blonde thought to herself before using her arm to swipe all of her homework (and a singular umbrella) onto the floor.
She stood up from her bed, changed out of jeans, and instead got into some comfier bottoms before laying in her bed for a nap.
'A ten-minute nap wouldn't hurt."
WHEN AVA WOKE up, it was dark out. She furrowed her brow, confused about whether it was early morning or late night. She mumbled something incoherent and glanced at the clock where a glimmer of moonlight illuminated the circular object.
The blonde squinted her eyes, slowly leaning forward to get a better look, 2:18 AM.
A sigh escaped her lips and she ran a hand along her face, rubbing out any sleep that was evident in her eyes. She blinked harshly a few times before slipping out of bed to go downstairs, she wasn't tired anymore so there was no point in her trying to go back to sleep. It was technically Saturday anyways.
She pulled the fridge open, taking out a water bottle to quench her dry mouth. After a long gulp, she placed the water bottle down and looked around her cupboards for ready-made food she could snack on.
When Ava saw nothing, she frowned. She was about to leave before her stomach rumbled, the girl sighed and began going through the cupboards looking for things she could make. The girl glanced over to the bread bin and grinned when she saw pancakes.
She placed two into her toaster before taking out a plate and contemplating thinking of what to add to them. She went with honey and sugar.
AFTER THE GIRL WAS happily fed, she went to go back to her room but stopped when she saw her mother at the top of the stairs. "Why are you up so late...?"
Ava glanced at the wall, at the floor, and to the ceiling. All to avoid her mother's gaze.
"Ava..." The woman sighed, shaking her head lightly, exhaustion evident in her voice.
"Sorry... I had a nap after school and just..." The blonde shrugged, in the darkness, Ava could barely make out the outline of her mother.
"Okay... go back to bed my darling," the woman spoke kindly, the blonde could hear the smile in her voice. Ava nodded, "goodnight mum."
And that was that.
