Marcy had tried to go to sleep that night, but there was no way she could get her mind to rest after everything that happened during the day. So after tossing and turning in her bed for what felt like an eternity, she ultimately decided to put her new ability to get into the mindscape to use and give the gloomy place a makeover, like The Core said she could. It wouldn't hurt to make it a more hospitable place, even if this place would never be home to her.
It was pretty bizarre how it worked; She just had to think about what she wanted, and it would appear. It was like a video game.
She spent the whole night customizing the place; hours were like days up here. She basically made her own little fantasy kingdom, similar to the one The Core had made for her in the past, but with notable differences. There was a large castle in the midst of a dense mystical forest, which was where Marcy lived as the queen of the woodlands. All of the animals and people of the woodlands existed happily, and Marcy ruled with dignity. She mainly made it this way so she could have a sense of control over something in her life, even if it wasn't real. She could still be a hero somewhere.
She had even made fake versions of Anne and Sasha who ruled the kingdom alongside her. She'd given herself and the two of them royal attire that went with the respective colors of their Calamity stones: Anne had a beautiful blue dress with gold trim and a bright blue sword, Sasha had a dark-red tailcoat under a fluffy cloak with two pink swords, and Marcy was wearing a green, sparkly tuxedo-dress with a dark-gray cape and a scepter in hand. The three of them each wore crowns atop their heads: Anne's was a silver crown in the shape of leaves with a blue gem in the middle, Sasha's was rose-gold and spiky with a pink gem in the middle, and Marcy's was gold and kind of took the shape of twisty vines with bright green gems across it. The trio would fight off danger together, and the people of the woodlands would worship them for their bravery, selflessness, and courage.Putting this all together was admittedly really fun, but despite having (fake versions of) her friends here and a kingdom to rule over—her own perfect world—Marcy still felt completely and utterly numb. She wasn't sure what she was expecting to feel, though; she knew this was all fake anyways. It could all be gone in the blink of an eye. Not to mention, this completely went against the whole "don't run and hide away from your problems" lesson she'd learned in the previous fantasy world created inside the mindscape.
When she was taking some time to relax in the throne room, Darcy entered the castle uninvited and took a look around. "Hm. We like what you've done with the place, but did you have to include them?" Darcy shot a displeased glance in the direction of the soulless replications of Anne and Sasha, a bitterness present in its voice as it referred to the two.
Marcy sunk into her throne a little, letting go of a heavy sigh. "I don't know what's going to happen to them when our plans are in action, so I wanted to make sure I'd always have a way I could still see them no matter what happens." She admitted vacantly, her face expressionless. "They'll never compare to the real things, though."
Darcy took another quick look at Anne and Sasha. "Those two mean a lot to you, don't they?"
Marcy lifted her empty eyes off the ground and longingly looked over at the artificial versions of her dear friends. "Yeah, they do."
Darcy noticed Marcy's yearning and narrowed their eyes a little, returning their gaze to the somber dark-haired teen who sat in the large throne. "Oh, come on— you don't need them, you have us! We're all you need!"
"But..." Marcy frowned, looking down again. "but they're my best friends."
"Oh, please; Conquerers of the multiverse don't need best friends! When you rule over everything with us, those two won't even cross your mind!" Darcy asserted. "But we suppose we can let you keep them here, for now."
Marcy furrowed her eyebrows, avoiding eye-contact with her dark counterpart still. "But what if... what if I don't want to rule over everything? I made this whole kingdom for me to rule over up here, and I'm still not happy. What if I just want to be a normal person with a normal life?"
Darcy's eyes widened in shock. "What? Who doesn't want to rule the world?" It chuckled. "Marcy, we both know you've never been "normal". "Normal" people don't get themselves and their friends stuck in another dimension on purpose to run away from their problems, do they?"
Marcy's face went pale, and her jaw dropped. The guilt flooded through her like a vicious tsunami.
"That's right; you did this to yourself, Mar-Mar. So quit moping! We've got a bright future to look forward too!" Darcy added with a malicious sharp-toothed smirk across their lips.
Tears filled Marcy's eyes, and she tightly gripped the arm rests of her throne. "You know what? Screw this! I don't deserve any of this!" She suddenly reached up and grabbed her crown, aggressively throwing it across the throne room. It hit a framed painting on the wall, making it fall down onto the glass table beneath it and shattering it to pieces. She then sunk into the throne once more. "I deserve to rot in complete and utter darkness for eternity... not this."
Darcy's many eyes followed the crown as it flew across the room, completely unfazed by the loud crash noise it made when it collided with the glass table. "You can get rid it of it if you want to," It shrugged, "but why put all your hard work to waste? We understand this hard for you, Marcy, but the day you stop letting yourself being infected by guilt and start seeing the good side of all this is the day we can do great things together." Darcy turned their back to Marcy and began walking towards the exit of the room, momentarily pausing at the doorway. "You'd better get yourself together before the big day, or else." Then, it disappeared.Marcy sat there alone with her two-dimensional friends for awhile—just wallowing in her own shame and guilt—until she heard her alarm going off for school outside the mindscape. She quickly awoke, back in her physical body, and rubbed the sleepiness out of her weary eyes. Her body may've gotten rest that night, but her mind didn't, so she was still beyond exhausted. There was no way she'd be able to focus at school like this, but it was better than being stuck home all day with the awful thoughts that plagued her mind. If she could, she'd probably stay hidden away in the mindscape all day to avoid all of her problems.
She begrudgingly got out of bed and changed into her usual hoodie and sweatpants, closing her eyes as to not see the huge scar across her chest as she changed her top. Looking at it brought about an infiltration of bad memories, and Marcy didn't need that right now. She also put a bandage over the scratches on her forehead so nobody would see them, although seeing the bandage would probably bring about some questions from her friends anyway.
She didn't have much of an appetite, but nowadays Marcy hardly ever had the desire to eat, so she knew her body must be desperately craving nutrition, especially after barely getting any rest. Because of this, she took an apple with her before leaving for school and ate it while she walked. The air was becoming colder and colder with each passing day as winter rapidly approached. With it, the atmosphere became gloomier. It was also currently drizzling, which wasn't very uplifting to Marcy's glum spirits.
Hearing her phone buzz, Marcy pulled her phone out of her pocket and rubbed her tired eyes before reading the message she had received. It was a message from Sasha which read, 'Hey Mar-Mar! It's been a few days, is everything alright? xx'
"Wow," Marcy muttered to themself, "It's been a few days since I've last spoken to the real Anne and Sasha? Doesn't feel like it. Guess I'm really losing track of time." Scrolling up a little, Marcy found a bunch of other messages she'd missed from Sasha as well, mostly just asking how she was doing and other random things. Before Amphibia, it was Marcy who'd always spam Sasha and go awhile without getting a reply; times have really changed, haven't they?
'Sorry Sash, been super busy lately. Omw to school right now, so can we talk later?' Marcy texted back.
'Anne and I are otw to school too!' Sasha answered, 'But yeah, we can talk later if that'd be better for you. We just miss you!'
Marcy slightly furrowed her brows. Anne, Sasha, and Marcy used to spend as much time as they could together, but Sasha seemed to be with Anne all the time lately— at least, as far as Marcy knew. 'You've been spending a lot of time with Anne lately, haven't you?' She asked.
Sasha was quick to reply. 'Yeah, I have. She's great. <3'
Of course, Marcy agreed with that statement. Anne was great; She was beautiful, charming, strong, brave, comedic, and so many other things that Marcy adored so dearly— but the message she sent in response to Sasha's didn't do a good job at expressing those feelings. Maybe because Marcy was trying to suppress them, or maybe because she couldn't. The Core was really beginning to have an effect on her relationship with emotions and her sense of identity; She could barely even tell if The Core was influencing what she was saying/thinking right now.
'Nice :)' Was all Marcy responded with at first, before adding another quick message when the school came into view. 'Well, I'm at school now, so ttyl!'
'Oh okay! See ya Mars! 😘' Sasha replied. The kissy-face emoji caused heat to rush to Marcy's cheeks, but she quickly turned her phone off before she got the urge to continue texting the blonde.
It seemed a little odd (not necessarily in a bad way) how much time Anne and Sasha were spending together lately, but maybe Marcy was just jealous. She was happy that the two were enjoying themselves, though, considering what was in store for them in the near future; but clearly each other's company wasn't enough to get their minds off of Marcy, or else Sasha wouldn't have texted her. Although, if she was being honest, Marcy couldn't get her mind off of Anne and Sasha either— they were her best friends, her loves. Honestly, one of the worst parts of this whole situation was that she'd never get to confess her feelings to the two and live happily ever after with them like she thought she would. It hurt, but Marcy was pretty numb at this point, so these things didn't really get to her as much as they used to.Putting her phone back in her pocket, Marcy took a deep breath and gripped onto the straps of her backpack before as she entered the school.
