A few weeks later

Ever since that day, Marcy and Anise have been spending more time together, both in and out of school. They had also exchanged phone numbers, so whenever they weren't together physically, they'd keep in touch over text. Marcy's parents loved Anise, and that made Marcy glad, because it seemed like Anise really felt comfortable in her house, and of course Marcy liked having Anise over; spending time with them was like a breath of fresh air from all the current negativity in her life. She could forget about everything going on and just live in the moment whenever she was with them; they were like the rainbow that shines through the dreary fog after the rain.

Marcy and Anise would do a lot together. Anise would try to teach Marcy how to play softball, and Marcy would try to teach Anise how to play Creatures and Caverns as well as various other RPG games, but needless to say, the both of them weren't very good at the games the other tried to teach them— that wasn't to say they didn't have fun trying, though!

Anise and Marcy quickly became super close friends. The others—Avery, Harper, and Briar—would often hang out with them too. Marcy and Briar would often talk about things related to art and drawing together, as that was an interest they had in common. Marcy also learned that Briar was a big reader, and she took a bunch of book recommendations from her. Harper, on the other hand, had tried to teach Marcy how to skateboard; it took some time to get the hang of, but Marcy eventually found that skateboarding was pretty fun and that even if she wasn't the best at it, it was something she enjoyed doing with Harper. She loved her new friend group— she could be whoever she wanted to be around them, because they didn't know about her past, they didn't know about Amphibia (besides the invasion), and most importantly, they didn't know about The Core.

But things weren't all sunshine and rainbows the past few weeks, not at all. Also during this time, Marcy had gone to see a bunch of other doctors about her "migraines". She'd spoken to therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and many other doctors, but it ultimately ended up getting her nowhere because none of them could accurately diagnose her (which wasn't surprising at all, because 1. she wasn't telling them the whole truth, and 2. there really wasn't a diagnosis for what she was going through), so they just kept testing medications for conditions that were similar to what she was going through on her with hopes that something would help her, but if anything, she just ended up feeling worse. The side effects of the medicine combined with her lack of sleep and overall deteriorating mental and physical state were pretty extreme, so much so that one day, about a week ago, she had to stay home from school because of how awful she felt: She couldn't stop throwing up, and her body felt as brittle as a twig. After that day, she continued to refuse to go to school even though she'd stopped taking the medication, claiming it was because she still felt ill because of it— Of course, Marcy's parents were at first not keen about their daughter missing school, but when they were reminded of the worsening state she was in, they ended up giving in and allowing her to stay home a few days, even if they weren't very fond of the idea.

That wasn't the entire reason for her staying home, though. Another factor was that Anne and Sasha were going to be here soon—it was almost time to put the plan into action—and she had to be as mentally prepared as possible for whatever was going to happen that day. She knew that, whichever way it went, it'd be a whirlwind of emotions ending up with Sasha and Anne getting hurt, and Marcy feeling indescribably terrible; but, even if she knew it was extremely slim, she was still holding onto the chance that somehow, someway, everything would turn out okay.

During the time that she was out of school, Marcy would spend a lot more time in her made-up world inside the mindscape to escape all the pain in the material world. While the world she'd created was meant to be a safe haven for her, it also had its flaws. For one, she had no one to talk to besides The Core and all the fake people she'd created which were really only extensions of her mind and the people she knew, so it could get pretty lonely. Being in the mindscape for so long was also starting to negatively impact her memory; She'd come back to the physical world not knowing where she was sometimes, because she was so used to the mindscape that it was starting to become her reality. Her emotions were becoming more and more numb as time went on due to The Core integrating itself further and further into her mind as well, so it was safe to say that Marcy wasn't really herself anymore.

While in the mindscape, though, Marcy was also able to learn some more significant details about the Ultra Stone. Apparently, it could open and close portals to any dimension in the multiverse, create time pools, and—Marcy was really surprised by this—apparently, it could also be used as a weapon. The Core told her that there was this dungeon hidden near Newtopia that was full of weapons that could be powered by the stone. Also, the power of the charged Ultra Stone was unlimited unless the stone was broken or destroyed.
She quickly added this newfound information to her journal entry about the Ultra Stone; learning these facts didn't make Marcy any more hopeful for the future, but it was nice to have some more knowledge about the stone nonetheless.

All of her friends from school were constantly texting her, asking if she was okay and when she'd come back, because she had practically ghosted them— except Anise, who she told she was sick. She loved Anise, but she knew that being with her right now would just make her feel worse, despite it being the complete opposite prior. Anise saw her as this wonderful person, but it was only a matter of time before they found out who she really was once the Ultra Stone was charged, and Marcy didn't want to see the disappointment and horror on their face when they did; It'd be like a vicious stab in the heart.

She had been trying to keep in touch with Anne and Sasha, but it was hard. Marcy couldn't be around anyone anymore—even the people who used to bring her joy, solace, and distracted her from the darkness in her head—without feeling sick with herself. She was terrified, to say the least, even through her diluted emotions. She felt so empty, yet so overwhelmed at the same time.

It was awful.

...

Currently, Marcy was present in the mindscape as per usual. In the physical world, it was past midnight, but in her made up world, the sun was shining bright. It always was. She was sitting upon her throne, a vacant expression resting on her face as she stared ahead of herself at nothing in particular. Darcy was there with her, as well as the simulations of Anne and Sasha. The broken table from awhile ago was still there, unfixed.

Darcy was standing beside Marcy's throne with its hands clasped behind its back, a content grin across its lips with that usual hint of malice laced in it. It glanced up at Marcy, it's smile falling as it noticed the dark-haired teen's despondent countenance.
"Why so glum, Marcy?" It asked.
"Huh?" Marcy snapped out of her daze. "Oh. It's just finally occurring to me how real all of this is, I guess." She wearily muttered. "I can't believe that I'm here. Again. About to go behind my friends' backs to hurt them, again. Something I promised I'd never do again. And the worst part is, I barely feel anything— but I know that's because of you." She glared at Darcy, who just smiled evilly in response.
"Oh, you'll thank us later, Mar-Mar— trust us." They said as they approached the exit of the throne room. "Just two days left, and then the world will be ours to conquer."

She sunk into the large chair and let go of a heavy breath as Darcy disappeared. Anne and Sasha were going to be here in two days. Ready or not, things were about to get super crazy for Marcy, her friends, and quite frankly, the whole world.

"I'm sorry in advance, guys... I'm so sorry..." She whispered to the fake versions of Anne and Sasha who were standing beside her. "I don't deserve it in the slightest, but... I hope that, one day, you'll be able to forgive me for all of this."
