As I walked towards the exit of the courtyard of the Solace palace I could sense the prince running after me as he yelled for me to stop. Bandages clung around various parts of my achy body but despite the pain that kept hitting me I was hellbent on leaving and nothing was going to stop me.
"Master Harvey!" I heard the prince shout before a hand grabbed my shoulder and forcibly turned me around to match eyes with him. I hesitated as I suspected that I knew what he wanted, which was for me to stay longer and/or help. I subconsciously stepped back as I felt a ping of pain from my shoulder which I rubbed away from his grab.
"No offense meant, Prince Brice, but I thought my intentions were made perfectly clear to you and the rest of your court about my immediate departure," I told him but I paused as I reflect on the past few days. "I do thank you for saving me, no further assistance is needed from you humans. I'm not like other wizards so I don't need any further medical aid if that's what this is about."
"You're limping and I'm concerned you are not well enough to be going anywhere given the state of the world right now," Brice said full of concern. While touching, his worries are truly wasted on someone like me. Indeed, I'm still in pain but it will soon pass once my regeneration has kicked in. I, unfortunately, do not have time to wait for that to happen; I've already lost so much time from being unconscious for three straight days.
I smiled at him. "My injuries aren't completely healed so while your concern is valid and touching, it is wasted. I have time-sensitive things to do so I thank you for your help but I do not need it anymore," I closed in trying to end this conversation with this overprotective princeling. I go to leave again but he jumps in front of me much to my annoyance. "Look this isn't--"
Brice puts his hand up. "Just answer my one question and I will let you go even though I don't think you should leave," he interrupted. Well...one question won't hurt.
"Fine, what is it?"
"Why is it that the most powerful wizard, the leader of the magic community might I add, refuses to be involved in this war against magic? Why haven't you done anything to help the people who follow you? Surely with your power, you would be able to end the war," Brice asked me. I paused as I didn't expect him to be so bold in his what seemed like accusations. I chuckled lightly finding this princeling amusing.
The corner of my mouth slightly up in a half smile at the man. "You're right, I could end this war overnight should I desire but why waste the mana? I've lived long enough to know that sometimes the best course of action is no action at all. This war of yours is a joke," I told him and he seemed offended by my words.
I see his hands ball into fists at his sides. "How can you say something like that?! Do you not realize how your actions are influencing this war?! We humans are fighting this war for you wizards, a war that you should be involved in! Why haven't you fought back?! Why--"
"Why do you assume I haven't done anything?" I cut him off. "Out of the two years this war has lasted so far, the magic community has only suffered two casualties thanks to the measures I implemented early on." He stared at me shocked.
"How is that possible? What have you--"
I sigh as I shake my head. "No, I'm done with this pointless debate of ours. You annoy me," I said which silenced him. I'm not shocked at his accusations, I'm glad to hear of it. I'm happy to know that no one has caught onto what I've done to protect the Wizard Territories. The longer that no one knows means the greater the chance the magic community stays safe. Now that I think about it...the spell takes tremendous amounts of strength and magic from me constantly which is probably what contributed to my capture. I need to fix the spell as soon as possible so I don't pass out again and leave the territories vulnerable. "My duty as the leader of the magic community is to protect the magic community. It isn't to protect you humans and the demi-creatures. I know your father and the other leaders are confused by my detachment from this war which is why I leave you with this...I do not need the help nor want the words of those who do not know of what they truly fight."
