Mirth woke to Aurora gently but insistently shaking them. They forced groggy eyes open to see a very aware and worried look on their mum's face.
'What's wrong?' they muttered through dry lips, tacky from yesterday's unwashed makeup.
'We should go. We should go. Get up and get ready to go. We have to go,' Aurora said with insistence.
Mirth frowned, their face contorting uncomfortably with sleep. 'Go? What are you talking about? Go where? Mum, are you ok? Is something wrong?'
Aurora stood and started to pick up clothes then drop them again, pick up and drop as though she was trying to pack but kept missing the bag part. 'Take this Dust. Is Zennick safe too? We have to go. Sander will help. We have to go before they come,' she kept mumbling over and over to herself.
Mirth didn't remember ever seeing their mum get this upset before. She was clearly freaked out, but her brain just couldn't make the next necessary steps.
'Mum, settle down. What's going on? Who are they? Please, try and explain. We can go where you like, but tell me what's going on.'
Aurora dropped the bag of Dust offered before on Mirth's bed as she moved from one bit of clothing up and down, to the next. Still unable to pack that bag she so clearly needed.
Mirth opened the bag expecting to see nothing, or maybe some crumbs and was shocked to see it was full. 'Mum, where did you get this must Dust? This is.. Months worth of Dust. I've never see this much. Is this Sanders? Why do you have this?'
Aurora finally found a bag and held it tight, reaching for something and then pulling back, just out of reach. Her white hair, an unusual colour in the Roots now Mirth really looked at it, was poking out everywhere as though she'd been pulling it.
Aurora looked at Mirth with her big grey eyes in her pink face, a sight Mirth still wasn't entirely used to. Her eyes used to be so very green, so alive like the leaves of Ysgawen itself.
Mirth was about to reply when there was a bang from the door, and before either of them could respond, the door to Mirth's room was thrown open and two hulking fairies in slick gold suits stepped in.
'That one' one of them indicated at Mirth on their bed and the other moved with surprising speed to grab at the teenager still waking up.
Aurora screamed 'You can't take Mirth! You can't do this! You can't take them!' at an ear splitting volume and jumped on the Fairy moving towards Mirth. She scratched with her claws extended to maximum gauging out hunks of the red fairy's skin, but they didn't seem concerned. Aurora, still screaming, bit at their neck and tore a hunk of.
Mirth could only look at their mum fighting wildly as the fairies moved towards them.
'Run, Mirth!' Aurora finally screamed as she was thrown off the back of one fairy by the other.
Finally coming to themself, not even trying to dress, they jumped up and out of the only window in the room, no expensive glass to deter their smooth sail through the air.
Hitting the ground hard, Mirth picked themself off the dirty, various junk nicking some of their skin and shedding blue on the ground, they ran to the only exit of the junkyard. Why wasn't there a second exit? Why were there such tall buildings around the yard?
Cornering the building and nearly falling over, Mirth could see Zennick standing at the entrance to the yard looking shy. He would usually come early to apologise when they'd had a fight even if it wasn't his fault.
'Zennick! Help!' Mirth yelled out with pure panic.
Zennick, stunned, could only watch. His eyes widening.
