The flying fairies flew at the hover bikes with grim determination. Most had only their fists and hands to fight with, while the Dust Co. fairies had tasers, guns, and practice. The flying fairies, though new to their power, were more nimble, but the hover bikes were faster. Each tried to outmanoeuvre the other to struggle hand to hand, or for one to be cast down onto the soil at Ysgawen's feet.
Mirth ignored it all. That was the plan. The other three would do their best to deter the gold guards from stopping Mirth as they shot through the lines, rainbow wings glimmering behind them like beautiful doom.
Mirth heard Zennick cry out, his metallic green wings stopped from their speedy beating by two hover bikes. Mirth wanted to turn back and save him like they'd always done, Doxod pulled Mirth on. 'Looking back only gives them time to chase you more,' he yelled through gritted teeth, diving out of the way of a bike set to collide.
Sparkletouch screamed out in panic doing her best to avoid being hit while harming none, 'these fairies are out to kill. Why?' But no one heard her.
Mirth and Doxod, Sparkletouch guarding their rear, pierced through the wave of golden soldiers and came out into the small dead space between the next wave of soldiers and the canopy. 'Her window,' Mirth pointed to the others, aiming for the apex of Ysgawen, the tall glass clear in the midday light.
They dodged at a diagonal to their previous path, flying in tight circles as time to avoid the hover bikes. But there were too many.
They were about to be surrounded when a yelled came up from the lower branches of the canopy and the Trunk sat just out of reach.
From the homes and houses of the canopy fairies poured out fairy after fairy with glowing bright wings. It wasn't a horde like the Rooters below, but it was unexpected.
The group of smartly dressed Canopy fairies, dressed in pale dresses and pants, slashes of black clear on their outfits, flew to the hover bikes and attacked them with whatever was in the house; pillows, abstract art, broken bottle, and serving platters.
Mirth, Doxod, and Sparkletouch watched with amazement as more fairies came from around the tree dressed in their best, lead by Aurora and Sander.
'They took a while to convince, the gnats, 'Aurora cried out to her child with a pumping fist. The fabulous fairies following her cried out raggedly. 'Mushrooms are coming up everywhere! All over the tree! More fairies are coming by the minute! Fly, Mirth! We got you!'
Aurora, Sander and their motley crew flew straight past Mirth and into the golden soldiers who'd been about to attack.
Shocked, they were overwhlemed in a moment, some pulled off their bikes and left to hand from claws high in the air.
'Try not to kill them!' Sparkletouch yelled out pathetically as she chased after Doxod and Mirth who had already rushed ahead to the base of Dust Co.
The glass Mirth had broken only a few days before had been replaced. Grabbing a leaf, larger than their bodies but light as wings, Doxod and Mirth flew hands first into the glass, going as hard and fast as they could.
At the last second, Mirth looked to Doxod as he looked at them. They smiled at each other.
The shattering was muffled as the leaf pushed everything forward. The sudden give forcing the two fairies to tumble forward onto the leaf.
The lay in a heap on the leaf, thankfully save from the glass.
Disoriented, they tried to help each other off, checking for broken wings. The armour had protected them against most of the damage. Doxod had a painful looking tear on his lower right wing that would make flying difficult without a wing bandage, but he shrugged off Mirth's attention.
