Long before she arrived, the sound of her five-inch heels clattering against the hardwood floors of Allen Clifford's fashionably decorated hallways, one of New York City's largest law firms, could be heard. But Yashaswini Thakur didn't stop to admire the minimalist interior of the passageway. She never followed through. She wasn't the person who cared about such stuff. She only focused on giving her best and was ready to deliver whatever she had to give in to the work she was supposed to do. Yeah, she was a perfectionist.

For the umpteenth time, Yashaswini adjusted the document tucked under her left arm. She was nervous. Even being a perfectionist, knowing that whatever she was doing was impressive, she was nervous. She was scared that all the long working hours would go in vain. And everything she was feeling was because of her supervisor. She hated him with everything she had. It wasn't that she was being unreasonable, it was just that her supervisor was always a pain in her ass.

Annually, Allen Clifford hires 30 new Harvard Law School graduates as junior associates. Yashaswini couldn't believe her eyes when she opened her mail and discovered she had been invited to join the company. It was her childhood dream to get selected into Harvard. That is the only reason why she left India behind and never looked back. Or maybe there was something else why she never wanted to go back to the country. But she enjoyed learning and giving in efforts for her dream. She just couldn't believe that it was finally happening. She goes back remembering the time when she was going through the screening process for her dream company. The screening process had taken two weeks and included standardized exams, panel discussions, and personal interviews.

Was she reading the mail correctly, was she just dreaming or was she celebrating too soon? Doubts plagued her as she returned to her apartment. She didn't let herself relax until she got home and read the email again on her laptop half a dozen times. Yeah that's right, when you get into your dream college as well as your dream company, you just can't believe that's really happening. C'mon we all know god can't be that kind. We all can agree on that.

She was still trying to get into the good graces of her boss, Mr. Will, her 'pain in the ass' supervisor seventeen months later. Yashaswini has never been able to score points with Mr. Will since the moment she met him. Just because of some small mistake of coming to the firm 13 minutes late as she got in an accident, he's been nothing but a complete asshole to her. He just thinks she's broken goods and can't get anything right. And that is the only reason why she was never assigned to any of the major cases and was always overloaded with paperwork, which meant she was always the last one to leave the office.

Regardless of the late nights, she was frequently the first to arrive at work the next morning, but Mr. Will was never there to witness it. Even if he did happen to arrive at the office that early on occasion, there was no reason for him to go all the way to the corner of the room where her work station was and see her engrossed in a task, an hour before the rest of the junior associates checked in.

Yashaswini had finally been given an opportunity to prove her worth to Mr. Will and hopefully the rest of her colleagues, who had revealed in her humiliation, after seventeen months of being unimportant in the eyes of anyone consequential in the law firm. It was quite understood that her boss didn't really like her. But she never got why her classmates then and colleagues now hated her. They always got in with the boss and never missed a chance to bully Yashaswini and it just got worse each time. After all, it was simple for the nineteen of them to combine together against the one who was already being targeted. Yashaswini didn't mind being the one who was bullied by the other junior associates. It gave her an excuse to avoid socializing with them and making idle small talk.

And, while there were times when she wished she had friends, she would much rather be alone. It is the best way to be, as it let's you have more time to concentrate on your career and improve your work. Something, the only thing she had focused on for the past eight years was 'working hard'. She was always cooped up in proving that she deserves better and maybe she lost that enjoying and having fun part way past her now. The only thing that kept her going was at least she was in the field she loved.
