Vihaan honked one last time before stepping out of his car, only to find the front gate locked. "No, no, no," he muttered to himself in frustration. He then yelled out, "YASHASWINI!" He felt lost and unsure of what to do next. Going back home was not an option as he didn't want to subject himself to Aisha's questioning during her baby shower. He was also afraid that if he got back on the road, he might end up causing harm to himself or others.
Shaking the metal gate to make it rattle, he shouted out "Yashaswini!" again. The porch light flickered on and the front door opened. Mrs. Thakur came out, searching for the source of the noise. "Who is there?" she called out.
"Aunty, is Yashaswini home?" Vihaan asked. Mrs. Thakur took a closer look at him and asked, "Vihaan? Is everything okay?"
"Yes," he replied. "Is Yashaswini home?" Mrs. Thakur called out to Yashaswini, who was on the upper floor balcony. A minute later, Yashaswini appeared at the door, dressed in a comfortable black sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. She walked towards the gate, barefoot, and unlocked it.
Looking up at Vihaan, she asked, "What's going on?" as she examined his face with concern.
"Are you okay?" Yashaswini asked as Vihaan pushed open the gate and approached her. The words he wanted to say were stuck in his throat. He wasn't one to cry, but Yashaswini's genuine concern almost brought him to tears. He took a deep breath, trying to compose himself, and shook his head.
Before Yashaswini could say anything else, Vihaan pulled her into a tight embrace. They stood like that for a while, with Vihaan resting his head on her shoulder and letting out short, crisp breaths. Gradually, he began to feel some of the tension leave his body. Yashaswini's arms tightened around him before she finally released him.
"Vihaan?" she asked, her voice muffled.
"Hmm?" he replied.
"As much as I love standing here with you, it's getting cold and I can't feel my toes anymore."
Vihaan chuckled and let go of her.
Yashaswini's bedroom was a haven of comfort and warmth, the walls adorned with posters of their shared memories and shelves filled with books they had devoured together. It was a place where Vihaan felt safe enough to unravel the tangled threads of his past trauma or discuss anything for that matter. They spent all of their childhood in that room. It held a really special place in their hearts.
As the sun cast its gentle glow through the curtains, Yashaswini sat perched on her bed, her eyes filled with concern as she listened intently to Vihaan's heartfelt confession. Vihaan, with a mix of vulnerability and hesitation, began to reveal the depths of his past wounds.
"Yashu, after you disappeared from my life, I was lost," Vihaan began, his voice tinged with pain. "I started dating a girl named Priya in high school, and I thought she was the one. But she was cheating on me with one of my close friend, deceiving me with her sweet façade. I didn't really care about anything but the only thing that bothered me was the feeling of not being good enough for anyone."
Yashaswini's heart sank as she heard the betrayal Vihaan had endured, her empathy radiating from her eyes. She reached out and gently placed her hand on Vihaan's, silently reassuring him of her presence.
"I broke up with her years ago, but now she's getting married to my cousin, Karan," Vihaan continued, his voice wavering. "It's as if the wounds I thought had healed are torn open again, and the pain feels raw, Yashu. I don't know what to do."
Yashaswini's gaze softened, understanding the depth of Vihaan's turmoil. She had always been his confidante, his rock in times of stormy emotions. Taking a deep breath, she gathered her thoughts and spoke with gentle determination.
"Vihaan, I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you," Yashaswini replied, her voice filled with empathy. "But remember, you've grown so much since those days."
Vihaan looked at Yashaswini, his eyes searching for solace amidst the whirlwind of emotions. He knew her words held truth, but the heartache felt overwhelming.
"I understand that seeing Priya marry your cousin is stirring up old wounds," Yashaswini continued, her voice steady. "But you don't have to let it define your present. You have the power to choose how you react to this situation."
A flicker of determination ignited within Vihaan's eyes, a glimmer of hope amidst the turmoil. He took a deep breath, drawing strength from Yashaswini's unwavering support.
"You're right, Yashu." Vihaan said, his voice resolute. "I've come so far, and I won't allow the pain of the past to overshadow the happiness I've built in my life. I'll confront these feelings, acknowledge them, and then let them go."
Yashaswini smiled, her admiration for Vihaan's resilience shining through. She knew that he had taken the first step toward healing, toward finding closure.
"You're stronger than you realize, Vihaan," she said, her voice filled with pride. "Remember, healing is not a linear journey. It's okay to feel the pain, but it's also important to recognize your own growth and the love and support that surrounds you."
Vihaan nodded, gratitude and determination etched on his face. In that moment, amidst the safety of Yashaswini's bedroom, he knew he could face his past and emerge stronger.
With the weight of his confession shared and the support of his best friend bolstering his spirit, Vihaan found solace in the knowledge that he was not alone. Though there was one more thing he needed to say out loud which was bothering him for years now.
