Gabriel's POV
It had been almost a week since I saw Artemis.
I felt myself going a little crazy. She made me furious. Making stupid decisions and then branding me overprotective.
I stared at the papers on my desk. They detailed a portion of the pack finances.
She wasn't even wearing her shirt properly when I arrived. I don't care about that, but Chloe would be worried if her sister got sick.
My phone beeped.
"I miss you. Can we hang out today?" Read the message from Chloe.
I didn't hesitate for a second, "Sorry, baby I'm swamped and you're just too distracting."
I put my phone on vibrate.
She was still at her fucking university.
My fists clenched by themselves.
She's going out wearing practically nothing meeting shitty men and women.
Here I am, not able to protect her, not able to see her, hear her, smell her.My mind drifted back to when she caught me sniffing her pillow. She was so concerned about my sleep.
My lips quirked and my fists unclenched.
When she first came in, I was sure she would know or tell Chloe.
Chloe
I know she's not my mate, but she is objectively the better person for the Luna position. Besides there is no way Artemis would accept me after dating her sister.
I know that if I want Chloe to be my Luna, we need to be intimate, but fuck if that doesn't feel impossible.
When I spoke to Artemis about children she reacted badly. Of course, she doesn't get it, not yet anyway, but I was subconsciously hoping she would see that I was a good protector. That she could rely on me. Instead, she thought I was calling her a child.
God the look on her face. She was furious and so, so sad.
It made me angry. She never did what I wanted her to do. When I pushed her behind me to deal with a belligerent drunk does she let me protect her? No, she goes and apologizes to that fucker.
I hint at being a good father. I was expecting her to get quiet and think about me as the father to her child, but no she thinks I'm tricking her sister.
I strangle her. Kidnap her and destroy her car. Does she run as far as she can? No, she goes to check if I've been hurting her fucking sister.
My phone lights up as another message from Chloe comes through.
I can't even break up with Chloe because I know Artemis would never speak to me again.
My fists slammed onto the surface of my desk.
The pounding of hurried footsteps cut off as the door swung open.
Kyle's suspiciously sunny expression peered around the door.
"Heeeey, buddy"
My glare skewered into him.
"I see you broke your desk?" His voice was desperately cheerful.
A glance down confirmed that he was right.
I refocused my stare on him.
"The finances getting to you?"
"No."
"You miss your girl?"
Kyle knew about Artemis. Riley had told him the second we got home in the hopes that he could convince me to let her go.
