Jozef stayed with me for a good while until he seemingly got bored he left saying he needed to talk to his "pack".
The man looking me over was not part of the pack. He was the private doctor of Jozef's richest pack member.
When I asked him to fetch the police he answered with a simple, "No. I don't think that would be a good move for me, do you?"
It wasn't even disappointing anymore.
"Then the least you could do is leave me with some good painkillers."
"What? You planning an overdose?" He asked his back to me as he rummaged through his bag.
"Not really your business, is it?"
He paused, "I guess you're right."
He pulled a handful of packaged syringes from his bag. Slowly, clearly debating with himself he placed the handful in a draw about three meters from the bed.
"I'm sorry. I really hope you find your way out of this situation, but I can't do anything else for you."
Jozef caught him as he was leaving, "Did you give her any painkillers?"
The doctor paused before answering, "No."
Jozef rolled his eyes, "Don't lie to me doctor, I can hear your heartbeat."
The doctor was sweating, he glanced at me briefly.
I lay back and stared at the ceiling.
"There is morphine in the draw."
Jozef watched him expectantly.
"Don't let her administer it to herself. I think she was planning to OD"
Jozef nodded happily, "Understandable, don't you think, doc? She just had someone killed, and realized how much she has been torturing the one man who loves her." He patted the doctor on his shoulder, "Don't worry. I'll keep a close eye on the morphine."
The doctor nodded and left the room.
Once the door had closed Jozef strolled to the morphine draw, "So, suicide?"
"That wasn't what I was planning, I'm just in pain."
"So why did the poor doctor think that?"
I rolled my eyes and looked away, "He pissed me off."
Jozef laughed. He took one syringe of Morphine out of the draw and walked towards the bed.
"This is what you want?"
Jozef's already tall frame seemed more daunting than usual as he stood next to the bed.
I nodded.
"Well you'll have to prove that you aren't going to try to OD with it. You heard the doctor. I have to be careful."
I frowned, "I'm not trying to OD. You can hear my heart can't you?"
Jozef tapped the still packaged syringe against his mouth, "I can't take chances when it comes to my soulmate."
"Then what am I supposed to do to convince you?" This was a game. Another time it might have made me angry, but now I was in too much pain.
"Why don't you try showing me your enthusiasm for life?" He tried to keep his smile in, but like a child playing his first prank, his grin kept dislodging the innocent expression.
Enthusiasm. He had used that word to describe the kiss he wanted from me.
I didn't bother sighing, not even internally. This was what my life was going to be like.
