We quickened our pace as the clouds began to gather in the sky. Rain drops splash the floor as we take out our umbrellas and carry on. Sounds of stone scraping alerts us and we stop. In a blink of an eye we see a gargoyle statue falling ready to smash us to death. Instantly my reflexes had me pushing Wednesday out of harms way. Just about to be crushed by the hefty object bolting towards me someone screams my name."Nikova!" The person screams pushing me out of the way as we land on the floor and everything goes black.
...As my eyes flutter open I start recalling the events that previously occurred. Looking up I'm met with Xavier's warm smile looking down upon me.
"Welcome back." He softly says.
I quickly sit up ready to go find Wednesday when he's quick to stop me.
"Just take it easy." He explains with his hands ushering me to stay seated as he sits on a near by chair himself.
"Nurse said you don't have a concussion, but you probably have a nasty bump, huh?" He explains.
"Your the one who pushed me out of the way before I got crushed to death?" I ask.
Someone clears there throat interrupting.
"Yes he was because you stupidly forgot to put yourself out of harms way by saving me. Idiot." Wednesday says as she was in the room this whole time.
"Just an Instant reflex. Plus we both know you would let that thing kill you since you've been off after what happened today." I reply to her.
"I remember feeling a mixture of rage, pity and self disgust ready to let that thing end me." She explains only proving me right.
"And I'm the idiot?" I questioned her.
"Losing to Bianca has that effect on people. But your sister took care of her." Xavier says looking at Wednesday then me.
"Why did you save me?" I question him ignoring the previous topic.
Xavier clicks his tongue then looks at me
"Call it instinct." He response.I take a few moments to study him before replying "So you were guided to help a damsel in distress to extract my undying gratitude?"
"Mm-hmm. Most people just say thank you." Xavier says while look at my uncovered forearm spotting my infinity birthmark.
Clearing my throat finally snapping him out of his stare match with my arm. "Thanks but I didn't need to be rescued" I simply say.
"So I shoulda just let that thing smash you to mush?"
"I would rather save myself. Plus something like a stupid statute won't take me out so easily." I exclaimed.
"Good to see you haven't changed." Xavier replied with a scoff. "If it makes you feel any better let's just say I returned the favor." Seeing the confused look on my face he adds " Xavier Thorpe? You probably don't remember me. Last time we met, I was about 2 feet, shorter 40 pounds heavier."
"What happened?l I ask
He exhaled "Puberty, I guess."
Giving him one of my "are you dumb" glares I add. "What happened the last time we met?"
He looks down towards the floor "Oh, uh. Yeah, it was my godmothers funeral. She was friends with your grandmother, and spent their twenties together in Europe, swindling the rich and notorious. I don't know, but we were ten, and we were bored, decided to play hide and seek. I had the inspired idea to hide in her casket. I got stuck as it was headed to the crematorium."
