I played with my red fitted dress that sat at my ankles. It was silk and surely very expensive. But Biana insisted on paying for it for our Foxfire annual dance. I brushed my newly curled hair behind my ears and played with my earrings Bi insisted would look amazing with the dress.
Also surely expensive.
I stared at the transformed me in the mirror. She was pretty. But she wasn't me.
Too much make up. I told Biana to put less on. But when Biana says, Biana gets.
She had insisted that this was a special occasion. I hadn't even gotten a date.
I had gotten plenty of invites, from all different boys. But none of them felt...right.
It sounds cliche but I really wanted to go with someone who I guess- felt- right.
I sighed and tutted as I picked up the scattered cosmetics on Biana's bedroom floor. Biana's voice rang through the hallway.
"Finally!" She exclaimed. I peeked my head out the door expecting to see Biana making her way to the room. But she was nowhere in sight. I frowned slightly and placed my hands on my hips. Biana always made me pick up HER stuff. I tutted and went back to cleaning the room.
I picked up a forgotten pink lipstick and a mascara. I put them on her vanity, staring myself in the mirror.
"Who am I kidding?" I said tilting my head down defeatedly. "I'm so ugly."
"Who said that?" A male voice said quietly.
I turned quickly, tears slipping down my face to see Keefe Sencen standing in the doorway, leaning on the doorframe, hands in pockets.
"Hey." He made his way over to me seeing my ugly tears and sobs. "Come here."
I sank into his arms. Sinking into the hug.
"Please don't cry." He said still persisting.
Still holding me.
My mascara was surely dripping down my cheeks for sure.
"Now what's wrong?" Keefe whispered his hot breath fanning my cheek. I sniffled softly and let go of Keefe and of his surely expensive designer jacket.
"I'm too ugly. I don't have a date to the dance. It's probably already started and my makeup is a mess." I stopped crying, now my sobs reduced to sniffles. Keefe checked a watch I had gifted him, for midterms. It suited him, as it matched his ice blue eyes. His eyes crinkled in frustration.
"Well, I don't know what time it is. But-" He paused taking something from behind his back. "I hope this makes your day a little brighter."
A beautiful necklace. Not looking too expensive but not cheap either. I breathed out at the sight of the little ice blue gem in the middle of the locket. I opened the locket carefully, but my stupid acrylic nails wouldnt let it budge. I let out a groan of frustration and handed it to a smriking, cocky Keefe.
"Let the master do his work."
Then he tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. I laughed at his priceless reaction. His smile lifted.
"Finally, a laugh I can get behind." He smiled genuinely and I felt my already flaming cheeks heat up.
With a swift pop, it opened and Keefe handed it back to me, the touch was electric and a million different thoughts were going through my head as I met his breathtaking ice blue eyes and his signature smirk and messy hair.
I looked down at the locket to find two pictures.
One of Keefe and I. The day Amy let us use her polaroid to take a picture while we were visiting, he was pulling a silly face whilst I glared at him, I remembered this day vividly. It was a few weeks after we had defeated the Neverseen. I grimaced at some of the scars on our faces in the picture. It was a reminder of who we are and what we sacrificed.
I forced my eyes to the second picture. A picture of all our friends, it was when we had defeated the Neverseen. The Council had taken a picture.
According to Oralie it was "A reminder of how much you sacrificed for the Lost Cities" And according to Bronte. "A new start, for some new heroes.".
My eyes teared up at the inscription on the bottom of the locket.
"You're a bigger hero than you think." . In Mr Keefe Sencen's own cursive handwriting. He smirked at me and then it relaxed into a smile. Probably sensing my emotions and gratitude I pulled him into a big hug.
"Thank you." I mumbled into his neck. "I'm sure your date woulsv'e missed you at the dance."
"I didn't need a date." He said shrugging it off.
I released the hug. "Why?"
"I would never let the Mysterious Wonderful Lady F stay here alone." He whispered.
"You didn't have to do that." I said sharper than I intended.
He approached me and I backed into the wall. My back suddenly straightening at the realisation of how close we were.
"I wanted to." He breathed out. "I like a challenge. Haven't we been through this before?" He said smoothly.
And then we were closer to each other.
And closer
And closer.
"Challenge huh?" I breathed out. "I bet you can't kiss me then." I challenged.
He chuckled, an airy sound. "That I can do." Then our eyes connected as we both leaned in.
Our lips touched and an electric feeling raced through my body and I grabbed his jacket and he touched a gentle hand to my waist.
The kiss lasted seconds but the connection was life long.
I pulled away surprised at my own actions.
"Pay up Foster."
I pretended to think long and hard. "Hmm...I'm kind of broke."
"Kisses will do." Keefe shrugged.
I pretended to think again. "I think I'm all out of those too."
He rolled his eyes and I laughed.
"Dance with me Lady Foster."
He bowed to me, his blonde hair falling in front of his eyes which he swept back swiftly.
"If you insist Sir Sencen." I curtsied and pushed my curls off my face. His ice blue eyes flashed with amusement.
"The lady must get a dance. She missed out on her Foxfire dance."
I rolled my eyes. "If you insist oh your Highness."
His eyebrows shot up in mock surprise. "How did I raise through the ranks so fast?!"
I laughed and we danced a slow dance hand in hand.
Just the two of us.
Keefe and Sophie dancing to their own melodies in Biana Vacker's bedroom.
