Oswald hummed the tune of a song his mother used to sing to him as a child. Edward recognized the song immediately and started humming along.

"What are you doing?" Oswald asked.

"I recognized the song you were humming so I hummed along." Ed innocently responded.

"My mother used to sing me that song." Oswald stared blankly.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Edward hung his head, "I did not realize it had emotional value to you."

Oswald huffed and rolled over in his bed. He didn't want to admit it but he did admire Edward's singing.

The bird man got up and walked over to the window. As Oswald stared at the lights of this city and listened to the sirens outside, he felt safe. He didn't know why all of a sudden he had a sense of safety. Was it false? Was this all a dream? Either way, he was happy to be here.

Only days ago he was bleeding out in a trailer hoping that someone might find him. He never anticipated that someone would be Edward Nygma, a man who worked for the GCPD. At first he worried he'd be turned in or killed, but for some reason this nerd wanted to keep him alive. He said it was for mentorship reasons bu—

"You want any soup?" Edward asked.

"You interrupted my thinking." Oswald grumbled.

"I apologize." Edward stopped talking.

A few minutes went by.

"Okay, fine," Oswald sighed, "I'll take some soup."

"Goodie! I made lots." Edward smiled.

Despite how grumpy Oswald was, he admired Edward's positive attitude. He admired lots of things about Edward, refusing to acknowledge it.

They sat down at the table and ate their soup in silence. Both of them were too awkward to talk.

"Where do you sleep?" Oswald finally asked.

"Hm?" Edward cocked his head.

"I sleep on your seemingly only bed, so where do you sleep?" Oswald asked again.

"Oh, I sleep on the couch." Ed chuckled lightheartedly.

"You do?" Oswald's gaze softened as he felt a sense of pity for the man.

"Yeah, but it's alright." Edward grinned, adjusting his glasses. "You need more rest than I do."

Oswald pondered letting Ed sleep in the bed. He soon realized he liked the idea of being in the same bed as this man. Was he..? No, he couldn't be. His mother just died, he was probably confusing appreciation for hospitality for romantic feelings. Still though, in the back of his mind he wondered if he may have more than platonic feelings for him.

The penguin has never been in love before, so he had absolutely zero clue on how it felt. Was it a sense of safety around that person? Was it looking into their eyes and being able to breathe steadily? He wasn't sure.

The two passed the day playing card games and talking about life. For the first time in forever, Oswald was in a good mood. He hadn't thought about his mother, he was eating food, he had a friend... He felt comfortable.

Edward went to his kitchen to cook up some supper for the two of them.

"Do you like steamed broccoli?" He asked the penguin who was seated at his table.

"I don't like it," Oswald sighed, "But I'll try it."

"Excellent!" Ed grinned his usual sweet grin.

This was the first time in awhile that Oswald hadn't simply turned down some food. Often it was because his mother's cooking was incomparable.

"Here you go." Edward placed the plate in front of Oswald.

He had made steamed broccoli with noodles and a hard boiled egg on the side. It seemed Edward loved to cook and therefore he anticipated the food would be good.

They barely talked during dinner since both of them were extremely hungry. Oswald didn't expect it but he really enjoyed the food Edward had made.

Oswald waddled back to his bed and slumped down on his side. His eyes felt heavy and he felt like he could fall asleep, but he felt cold.

"Edward?" He said after a few minutes of silence.

"Yes, Mr. Cobblepot?" Ed responded.

"Would you come here?" He asked.

Ed walked over to his bed.

"What did you need?" He asked.

Oswald lifted the blankets on the other side of him and patted the bed for Ed to lay down. Ed hesitated and lay on his side. They both lay there for a few minutes before Oswald slowly scooted towards Ed. He backed himself into the other man and fell asleep very quickly. Edward rested his head behind Oswald's, breathing on his neck.

Ed fell asleep soon after that.
