"Those flames were really big, Dad." Charlie says looking over at Dad by the oven after the Turkey had caught on fire, everything he made was burnt, while the TV showed a perfect Christmas dinner.

"Yeah, turkey's funny that way." Dad said looking back at Charlie and me at the table
"Dad!!" Charlie and I both yelled as we pointed at the oven that had caught fire once again
"It's done!" Dad said after extinguishing the flames

"You like osso buco, Charlie?" Dad says
"Didn't we go there last year dad?" I said looking out the window at the restaurant
"They're closed." Dad said driving off
"You know, Neal's a real good cook." Charlie said
" Yeah, and you should see him walk on water." Dad replied

"All right. Denny's! It's always open!" Dad said getting out of the car
"I don't wanna eat here" Charlie said staying in his seat
"What are you talkin' about? Everybody likes Denny's, It's an American institution! Right princess?" Dad said trying to get me to convince Charlie for him
"Let's go Char" I say with a sigh getting out of the car.

As soon as we walked in it was instantly loud
"Are you with Hatsutashi?" The waitress asked
"No!" Dad said immediately
"Dad burnt the turkey." Charlie said standing in front of me with my hands laying on his shoulders
"Oh, yeah. This way. Come on." The waitress said knowing exactly where to put us

"Right over there." The waitress said pointing at a table
"Thank you." Dad and I both said walking over to the table
"Here we go." Dad said as we all sat down
"Burn the Turkey?" Dad asked the man at the table near us, he waved with his bandaged up hand which made dad make a pained face.
"Coffee?" The waitress asked Dad
"No thank youuu, Judy!" Seeing her name tag and chuckling a bit

"What do you say we start out with cold glasses... of delicious seasonal favorite eggnog?" Dad said to Judy
"I don't like eggnog." Charlie said
"We're out" Judy said looking over to Charlie briefly
"Coffee. decaf." Dad said to her
"I'll have chocolate milk, please." Charlie said
"We're out." Judy said again, wow Hatsutashi must be really having a party.
"Plain milk's fine." Charlie said in defeat
"And I'll just have a water please." I said as Judy wrote it down and started walking away
"At least we know they got hot apple pie!" Dad said trying to lighten the mood
"We did." Judy said still walking away
"Mmhmm...This is nice" Dad said as we all sat there looking around awkwardly

"And Mama in her kerchief and I in my cap...
"had just settled down for a long winter's nap. "When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter,"l sprang from my bed to see what was the matter."Away to the window I flew like a flash. "With a miniature sleigh and St. Nich-- and Prancer and Dancer-- ...and to all a good night." Dad read skipping half of the book then us both getting up to leave his room

"What's that?" Said Charlie who we thought had fallen asleep
"What's what?" Dad said
"A Rose Suchak ladder"?
"It's not a ladder. I said, "arose such a clatter."
It means, eh, "came a big noise." Dad said trying his best to explain
"What?" Charlie said still confused
"Char, "arose" is a word that means "it came,"
and "clatter" is a big noise." I said sitting back down on the foot of his bed
"Now, please, go to sleep. Shut your eyes." Dad said wanting to go to bed himself

"How do reindeer fly? If they don't have any wings." Charlie said
"Fairy dust?"
"That's from Peter Pan, Dad."
"Horns."
"Antlers." I corrected
"Whatever. Their, uh, antlers give them--
You know, ther-- ther-- there's a slipstream effect-- The air go- T-They move fa-- They're weightless"
"But if Santa's so fat, how did he get down the chimneys?"
"He sucks it in like Grandpa."
"Maybe like jello!" I added in
"But what about people who don't have fireplaces? How does he get into their house?"
"Charlie, sometimes believing in something means you- means you just believe in it. Santa uses reindeer to fly because that's how he has to get around."
"But you do believe in Santa, right, Dad?" Charlie said
"Of course I believe in Santa. Now, please, go to sleep." Dad said

"Dad?"
"What is it, Charlie?"
"Maybe you better leave some cookies and milk out, just in case, okay?"
"Great. I'll just go preheat the oven."
"And don't forget the fire extinguisher." Charlie added
"Good night, Charlie." Dad said a little annoyed

"Don't worry Char, I'll make sure he doesn't burn the house down" I said to him giggling a bit then kissing his forehead
"Good night Charlie, I'm right down the hall if you need me"
"Good night (y/n)" he said smiling and finally closing his eyes.
