Chapter 3

Selena

The hours ticked by slowly as I sat on the cold, hard ground of my tiny cell. The only things in it were a sink, toilet, and a bed. I paced back and forth, trying to think of a way to escape. Out of all the situations I thought about being in, this was definitely the least expected. This was ridiculous! Before the beginning of the apocalypse this would have never have happened. Why do people always have to panic when something out of the ordinary happens? If everyone would just calm down then all would be good and I wouldn’t be in this situation. My stomach interrupted my thoughts as it grumbled loudly.

“Hey is anyone out there?” I yelled. “When can I get something to eat in this place?”

A male voice responded, “You won’t get any food for another few hours. Or longer if you keep making such a racket.”

“I don’t even belong in here. All I did was leave my house to see my friend. But right when I came out a group of soldiers in Humvees saw me and I was done for,” I said.

“I didn’t give them my guns so they arrested me,” the stranger replied.

“That sucks. Hey, wait for me before you head out to eat. I have some ideas,” I shouted back.

“Okay, but quiet yourself down. You don’t want those guards to hear you yelling.”

“Oh okay. See ya soon then,” I whispered.

I heard them murmur something that sounded like ‘stupid girl’ but I chose to ignore it. I sat down and contemplated my situation. Ari must be wondering what is taking so long for me to get there. I left my phone in the car because I didn’t think they would arrest me. Thanks to the General now I couldn’t tell her what happened. I already disliked him. He didn’t even give me a chance to prove myself! Ugghh! Be that way. I just had to find a way to get out of here so I won’t have to deal with that jerk. The only bad thing about escaping was that the military would be after me AND those diseased, drooling freaks. Goodie I could hardly wait for the authority and the dead to come for me. Whoop!

Hours truly do pass by slowly when you have nothing to do. I don’t spend them pointlessly, but I come up with a plan that I will tell my cell neighbor later at dinner if I choose to trust him. All of the sudden, I remember a quote from a book I had read a few months ago: May the odds ever be in your favor! Yeah right! That had not happened so far on my adventure, it has NOT helped me. It was too bad I was not more like Katniss. I sighed. All of a sudden, the guards started opening the cells.

One of the guards said, “Dinner time! For those who don’t know the drill, listen up! You are going to be handcuffed until you reach the dining hall, where we will take them off. But don’t get any ideas because we will all be watching.” His gaze shifts towards me standing there in the line and his eyes narrow. “Hey, listen up!” He marches up to me and shouts in my ear. “Hey, are you in there? I said PAY ATTENTION! Do you not understand me?”

I look at him and say, “Yes, Sir. I understand.”

“Good, You better newbie. I will be keeping my eye on you,” he said and walked back to the front.

What were people’s issues in this place? They all seemed insane. They told us to start marching and we did. We made it to the dinner hall and they removed our handcuffs. The dinner hall was a large room furnished with benches and tables. So welcoming. We got into the dinner line and were served food that looked disgusting. Eww. I was so glad I was ditching this place soon. I looked around for the person I talked to earlier. I saw a guy walking towards me and he gave me a nod and pointed me to a table in the middle of the room. He had brown hair and blue eyes. His was taller than me and appeared to be about my age. I guessed this was the guy who talked to me earlier. I headed over to the table where he pointed and sat down. He came and sat down next to me.

“Hey, my name is Troy,” he said.

“Hi, mine’s Selena. Are you the guy who I talked to earlier?” I replied.

“Yeah. So you wanted to talk, right?” I thought for a few moments before answering. Could he really be trustworthy? I really needed a person to help me escape and he was the only one who seemed eager to help me out. But why was willing to help out a girl he just met to leave?

“Yup! I was wondering if I could trust you cause you seem like a kind and trustworthy guy.”

“Oh yeah of course. I want to get out of here so badly. I was hunting with my friend and they came along. They asked me for my guns, but with them becoming very scarce I wasn’t just gonna give them up. They were my hope in surviving this.  Anyway, that was when they arrested me. My friend was off going to the bathroom when they took me so I am sure he’s worried about me.”

It would make a difference if he decided to give me up, but I was willing to take the risk. I would just have to go see the General again if he did and the General couldn’t do much anyway. I had this weird feeling or what some people called, instinct to trust him with my plan. I knew it was foolish but I was feeling rash so I decided to tell him.

“You can say that again,” I smiled. “Okay so here is the plan…” I whispered to him my brilliant plan.

He looked skeptical, but he agreed to the plan. By the time we were finished talking, the guards called us to form our lines. We got up from our table and lined up behind him the other prisoners. They smiled at me encouragingly as the guards put on our handcuffs. The guard who yelled at me earlier put mine on, making them especially tight on my wrists. I winced. He laughed at me as he told us to start marching before he said it again. We hurried back outside and saw it had begun to rain. I smiled involuntarily at the memories of rain from my childhood. I had always loved the rain. As it sprinkled my face with its welcoming wet drops I walked back to the cells.

We entered the building where our cells were and dread filled my body. Every ounce of me was reluctant to enter the cell. All I wanted to do was run away and never turn back. I reached my cell and as I entered an unseen force pushed me inside. One of the soldiers roughly took off my handcuffs. He then slammed the cell door shut, causing the sound of grinding metal to reverberate throughout the space. He started to march off without a glance toward me, his keys jangling by his side. The keys were just out of my reach but I slyly tried to reach for them anyways.  My fingers slipped through the opening in the bars. I quickly tried to snatch the keys before they were too far away but he abruptly whipped around and glared at me. This caused me to pull my hand back in ask quickly as possible before he could get his grimy hands on me. He gave me a warning glare that penetrated through me and made me want to go into the depths of my cell, but I held strong. I watched him as he irritably stared at me for a moment more, then he left me alone and walked away.

I released my pent up breath, thanking him silently for being lenient with me. After that little scene I grew tired and went to go lie in my cot. I tiredly fall into a fitful sleep. I dreamt of escaping this cursed military base with Troy. He then went to go find Ari but then the General ruined it all. What had been a peaceful and longing dream had become a nightmare.
