Chapter 11

The General

Infected. They were everywhere I looked. They had unexpectedly swarmed the fort in the dead of night, surrounding its perimeter to cut off escape. I had woken up to the shouting and shots of the soldiers shooting them down. I had hurriedly gotten dressed and ran out into the chaos. I surveyed the crowds of soldiers running here and there and spotted one of my officers, sprinting toward me with fright in their eyes. He reached me moments later, breathing hard and he bent down to recover.

“Sir…they are everywhere. Everyone is arming up for the fight for our lives,” he declared.

“Good work. Tell everyone to do so as quickly as possible.”

“Sir, yes, sir!” He went off running again, hollering his orders to pick up their pace. I jogged over to the perimeter and hurtled up the stairs. I reached the top and examined the hordes of infected. They seemed hungry and when they saw me they redoubled their efforts to get in for their feast on flesh. I shivered in response and my heart sped up a little more from the sight of them.

Everyone behind me had began to form their lines at the gate because when I turned around the first few rows were at attention, awaiting command. I nodded in approval and just then, the gates exploded open and the infected came swarming in. Disarray broke out in mere seconds and I tried to shout for organization but everyone ignored me, except a handful of soldiers near me. They snapped to attention and held their guns at the ready.

“Come with me,” I ordered. They followed without hesitation and we started off. 9 soldiers and myself vs. the infected. Lets do this. We descended the stairs and I peered at the mass of moving bodies. It appeared that we were already loosing terribly. The infected plowed through us because of the panic that had begun to set inside the soldiers.

I started to sprint toward the armory and the others followed me in my wake. It took us a minute to reach the armory because we had to push our way all the way there.  We charged through the entrance of the door that were open and I ran straight towards the grenades and ammunition.

“Everyone get as much grenades, weapons, and ammunition as you can and put them in the one of the tanks.”

“Sir, yes, sir,” they all said in unison and scrambled off to do their orders. I watched them run to and from the armory with armloads of explosives, while I kept watch for any infected coming our way. They finished doing so and came jogging back to me for new orders.

“Good work. Now go get some food so we don’t starve and a few tracking dogs,” I said. They looked at me curiously probably wondering why the tracking dogs but left hastily. I sighed as I looked around at my surroundings. What had happened to the fort? In just a few minutes everything has changed. I looked over toward the prisoner building and suddenly had a bright idea. I ran toward it and charged through the open door. I glanced around and saw all the prisoners cowering because of me. I guessed they thought they were going to be tortured or worse. That was more or less what I was planning on doing.

I swiftly scrambled for the keys in my uniform pocket and went over to the nearest cell. I spotted a frail, trembling young boy with knotted hair in disarray.  He cringed away from me, trying to get away from me; I frowned and pretended to ignore him. It pained me deep within that people were afraid of me. Oh well. I put the thought aside and fumbled to open the cell. My hands shook with nervousness and fear as I opened the cell.

“Come on, out you go,” I said as I dragged his body out. I hollered out to the rest of the prisoners, “When I get to your cell and let you out, line up.”
