Chapter 9
Selena
We travelled on the road that taking us away from the zombies and The General. I absorbed in the serene scenery, even though it wasn’t much. Ever since I had left my house I had felt weight on my shoulders and now I feel free as a bird. Even though I just survived a difficult ordeal, somehow I relaxed. The Humvees uncomfortable seat wedged into my spine but I savored the feeling of safety that enveloped me. I craved for it. I never knew what it was like to actually feel its warmth as it flowed abundantly, until now.
I must have had fell asleep, because Adrian shook me awake and told me we had arrived at a safe house for the night. I mumbled in reply and he must have understood my meaning because he easily picked me up and held me in his arms. I curled toward his warmth and he strolled toward the house. I figured he got in because what felt like seconds later I was laid down on a bed. At once I drifted off into unconsciousness and into sweet dreams.
Adrian
I sat down on the edge of the bed and watched her for a handful of minutes, warmth cutting through my fatigue. I gazed at her beauty, her perfect brown hair framing her face perfectly. I loved it when her light blue eyes studied my hazel eyes. She might not be perfect in other boys’ eyes, but she was in mine. The first time I had set my sight on her, I fell in love. Love at first sight right? One of my favorite parts about her was her slightly crooked nose that completed her look.
I stopped thinking about Selena because my day’s activities were catching up with me. I sprung up from the mattress, its springs groaning. I slowly ambled over to the adjoining room. I plopped down on the inviting mattress and welcomed sleep. My last conscious thoughts were of Selena. She struck emotions that I had never before in my life felt. I dreamt of fantasies of Selena and I.
I stirred back to consciousness as I heard steps come down the hall. My door steadily creaked open, a loud noise accompanying it. My heart hammered inside me, threatening to burst. I was definitely awake now. The door crept open a little more and I saw who it was, Selena. My heart slowed as overwhelming relief flowed through me.
“Gosh Selena, you scared me!”
“Oh, sorry about that...I was just gonna ask if you wanted breakfast cause I made some in the kitchen.”
“Yeah that would be great. Thanks,” my stomach growled in agreement and I chuckled. I unhurriedly got off the bed and meandered over to Selena. She waited patiently and we strolled out together to the kitchen. As we walked by the hallway mirror I glanced and saw my brown, wavy hair in disarray and dirt covering my face. I needed to take a nice hot shower after breakfast to fix up my hair and face. I sighed and proceeded on. I caught a waft of the cooking bacon and my stomach grumbled in reply. I couldn’t wait for the hot breakfast since I haven’t had one since the beginning of the apocalypse. You didn’t know what you had before it already gone.
We reached the kitchen and I marveled at all the wonderful food in the pans, awaiting consumption. I sat down on one of the bar stools and studied Selena’s expertise in the kitchen. She was the kitchen master. I quietly chuckled at the thought, but she had caught me laughing.
“Whatcha laughing at?”
“Oh nothin’ you need to know about,” she resigned but eyed me unbelievingly.
“Whatever.”
She resumed cooking and served me up a plate of steaming bacon and eggs. I dove into the hot deliciousness and rapidly finished. Selena contemplated my empty plate and gave me another plate, while she slowly nibbled on her bacon. Without delay, I plunged into the meal and finished it once again. A growing boy got to eat. I got up and cleared my plates and put them in the sink.
