Chapter 15

Selena

Seeing The General in front of me alive was mystifying. It scared me to think that he had continued to search for me until he found me. What was his problem? Was he like stalking me or something? I thought. I decided at that moment that I was going to get the answer out of him.

As I got pushed and shoved toward his tank I made a split second decision to be cooperative and to stay with him, so I could get some useful information out of him. I knew my friends would come for me anyway so there was no use trying to fight against The General unless it was to my advantage. I’ll let him think I’d given up my opposition towards him, so he’d relax his guard. When the time is right and his guard is down I will flee and escape from his eyes forever.

My thoughts and plans were interrupted when one of the soldiers shoved me down the ladder to the tank’s floor, banging my knee in the process causing me to groan in pain. The fall was going to leave a big, nasty bruise and I wasn’t looking forward to its’ pain. The soldier guarding me laughed at my pain, so I glared daggers at him. Annoyance filled his expression at my glare so he pushed me to the ground once again causing him to smirk.

“Shut up.” I snarled at him, venom filling my voice.

“Watch it little girl. You have no right to speak to me that way,” he growled.

“Try me.” I grinned prompting his rage as he lashed out at me, slapping me strongly. His slap was so powerful that it surprised me for a moment as it whipped my head backwards. The momentum of my falling body resulted in me tumbling back down to the merciless floor.

I struggled up right when an unseen force threw me back towards the ground. Another soldier had materialized from the shadows; disgust for me evident in his every move. As I landed on the ground he grabbed my wrists tightly and quickly put on handcuffs.

“This should do it.” He glanced at me with disgust. “No more messing around and don’t be disrespectful.” His gaze flickered over to the other soldier. “Don’t let this little girl get to you again. She may have a sharp tongue, but not for long. Her courage will fall and she will become cooperative. Won’t you?” He looked back at me.

“Nope. I was gonna, but being uncooperative is more fun.” I sniggered as he shook his head and walked away, back up the stairs and out of sight. I don’t know if it was just me, but he seemed familiar and that made me uneasy. I couldn’t ponder it for too long because the man in charge clambered down the hatch. He briefly peered at me, but hastily looked away.

“All right everyone lets get this show on the road. It’ll be getting dark soon and we need to find some shelter. I know we’ve all had a long, challenging day, but we can get through this. I believe in you and you’ve all done an excellent job today. You all have earned a day of rest and a nice, warm dinner if we can find shelter. Thanks everyone.” He ended his little speak as the tank began to roll out of the area. I scrambled up hoping for a chance to look out a peephole and see Adrian or Ari, but the soldiers were all in the way. I sighed and hopelessly sat down.

Fatigue suddenly filled me as I closed my eyes. As I drifted off to sleep I leaned over to rest my head on something comfortable and welcoming beside me.  I was too tired to care who or what it was as I slipped into a restless and dreamless sleep.

I awoke to the shouts and bellowing of the soldiers inside the tank yelling at each other. I groggily opened my eyes to see what was going on, careful to not let on that I was awake. It was silent a moment before I began to hear the drumming and pounding on the walls of the tank as I regained consciousness. It was softer and calmer at first, but slowly the beating got louder and louder until it was all I could discern from my surroundings. Panic encompassed me as I perceived the bone chilling sounds of moaning and scratching outside. I shivered at its meaning and fear crept in. I was too concentrated on the sounds outside that I jumped when someone yelled in my eye, trying to get my attention.
