Chapter 7
Selena
I saw the General and fear flooded throughout me. I looked at Troy and his friend and they looked just as frightened as I was. All these guards come out of nowhere and yank us back towards the torture room and I wasn’t sure I could take another time back in there. All the while, the General was beamed and all I wanted to do was yack at his feet just to wipe that grin off his face. I smiled at the thought and the General caught my smile and you could see confusing spread across his visage.
I laughed at his confusion. The guards started to hustle me away from the General. They also looked at me in confusion, but they probably just thought I was a maniac. The last I saw of the General was him watching me perplexedly. We walked in silence towards by doom and I was practically skipping. Now for sure, if not earlier, they thought I was a freak for sure and possibly a lunatic. Maybe, maybe not.
We continue to walk in the rain; the guards surrounded the three of us. My head hurt and I wondered why. I sloshed on, but at last, we arrived at the place of nightmares. We entered and I saw three seats. They shoved the boys into them and held me back. I was still unsure as to why I wasn’t sitting with them.
The guards restrained them, so they couldn’t escape. We all waited for The General to come in, but he was taking his time. Eventually, he lightheadedly marched in, bringing in a gush of wind and deluge.
“Ah yes, the whole family is here now.” he said with that smile of his. “Ready to begin?”
“Yup!” Troy spoke up, looking fed up.
“Fantastic! I’m glad.”
“Whatever” his friend said, finally talking for once.
“And who might this young fellow be? You come break into MY fort and try to rescue these prisoners? Why would anyone do that?”
“To get them away from your violent mind!”
“Well, well that isn’t very nice of you. You’re such a rude young fellow.”
“It’s just the truth.”
The General ignored his retort and picked up a small weapon. It couldn’t have been bigger then a pencil. It looked very sharp and thin; it appeared to be shining fiercely in the light bulb’s glaring light.
The General turned away from the tray of weapons and focused on Troy. My heart sped up in reply and all I wanted to do was lunge for the General and strangle him, but unfortunately I couldn’t.
I saw out of the corner of my eyes that Troy’s friend or whoever was slowly loosening his restraints. The Generals attention was on Troy, so he didn’t notice. I watched him as he loosened his restraints fully, no one else noticed, except me. The soldiers holding me back appeared to be entranced with the General, their eyes glazed over deep in thought. Their grip on me was somewhat looser then when they first took hold of me.
Troy’s friend looked up at me and slightly nodded at me. I had come up with a plan to escape my captors and his friend looked to know it too.
I whipped around so quickly that their grasp on my faltered and my hands were freed. I kneed the two soldiers swiftly in the groin and they doubled over in pain. All the while, Troy’s friend lunged out of the chair towards the General. They met and both tumbled to the ground. The General was on the bottom as Troy’s friend was on the top, strangling the General. The General tried to put up a fight, but failed and passed out. Troy’s friend got up and headed over to Troy and lifted him up gingerly.
“By the way, my name’s Adrian,” he said.
“Mine’s Selena.”
“Yeah I heard Troy call you that earlier”
“Oh, well lets get out of here but the General wakes up.”
“Good plan.”
We headed back out into the downpour and got soaked in an instant. Lightening lighted up the sky and thunder reverberated throughout the sky and flooded ground. We run; we splashed through the huge pools of water that had culminated. I slowed down.
“Hey!” I called out to Adrian. “Do you know where they keep the cars?”
“Uh yeah. Why?”
“We should go there. They took my car the day I arrived and it had all my stuff in it. Plus we could use it as an escape route.”
“Yeah sure. Follow me.”
We continued on towards the entrance of the fort, dodging the patrols around the prison. We end up at what looked like a huge warehouse building and we entered as quietly as possible. I saw my car over by the Humvees and I pointed it out to Adrian. He silently nodded and started to head over towards it. I noiselessly followed in his trail. I felt like a boss from the movies, creeping my way though the enemies base.
We made it over to my car successful without being compromised, but we are far from done. The keys were still in the ignition, along with all my survival stuff. It had practically been untouched since I’d been here. Good.
“Adrian,” I whispered.
“Yeah?”
“I think you should take one of the Humvees. I will follow closely behind you. Having a Humvee might be useful in the future.”
“Good thinking.”
He opened the back doors to my car and gently placed Troy in, buckling him in, but where he could still lie down. I got into the front and Adrian got into the Humvee in front of me. He started it up and I did the same. Just then a soldier heard us and started yelling. Soldiers come swarming in with their rifles raised in our direction.
The General comes storming in behind them and he looked furiously at us! His gaze penetrating through me, it was so powerful that all I wanted to do was curl up into a ball and cry. I shifted my glaze away from him.
Adrian started to move towards the guards as they aimed at him. He revved the engine and sped towards the big doors, plowing through them. Soldiers yelled and jumped out of the way. Some got off some shots at him but none succeed in hurting him. I advance behind him as he embarked into the rain. I briskly turned on my windshield wipers and my lights so that I could see.
Instantly I saw the gates looming close to us, getting bigger every second we approached. Unexpectedly, a bullet whizzed by my car and went out into the darkness. I looked out at my mirrors and see a flood of cars coming out after us. I slammed my foot down on the gas and charged through the gate with Adrian behind me now. The Humvees full of soldiers darted past the now broken gates after us.
Gunshots rung out in our direction, ricocheting off the walls just mere feet away from us. We picked up the pace and hastily drove down the endless road, the soldiers still on our tails. Abruptly a tank somehow comes roaring in front of us. We both tried to swerve out of the way, but I failed while Adrian thankfully clipped the tank but made it. I was not so lucky. I swerved, but I must have yanked the steering wheel too sharply and the car hit the tank. My car careened off the road then went spinning and flipping away from the tank into the darkness. It rolled and rolled and I jarred my head on the wheel. I felt dizzy as the car slowly stopped rolling. Adrian was nowhere in sight.
My shoulder felt weird. I must have dislocated it in the tumbling of the car. I tried to open my door but it was too damaged. I moaned and I glanced at my mirror. I examined my reflection, hardly recognizing myself. I had blood flowing down the side of my hair and a blackened eye. The rest of my body was in pain, minor cuts and scratches all over. One thing I failed to spot was a substantial gash in my side that splatted blood onto the floor.
Before I knew it, I felt warm and sleepy. I painfully curled up and closed my eyes. I heard moaning in the distance and Humvees driving up but I took no notice of them, just wanting to sleep peacefully. The last thing I caught before I fell asleep was the Generals voice calling out orders to kill the infected and to get medical personnel out here as soon as possible. I wondered why, but put the thought aside. I fell into the darkness again, welcoming its embrace.
