I was nervous about telling Selena about what had happened to everyone here. I had tried to push the memories away but they kept reoccurring in my head whenever I slept. No matter what I did, I couldn’t push them back for long.
In the darkness of the underground room, I saw a shadow coming toward me. I guessed it was Selena, but as the figure came closer I discovered that it was Adrian. I watched him as he walked up to me and slid down to the floor, next to where I was sitting.
“Hey, what’s up?” he said.
“Nothin’ really,” I replied.
“Why are you just sitting by yourself?”
“Hhmm. Ever since I’ve been here I have been alone with my thoughts as my friends.”
“I’m sorry. Do you want to talk about whatever happened to you?” He studied me with understanding eyes. “I know what you feel, I’ve felt the same way for the past week.”
“Really? What do you think I feel then mister know it all?” I retorted.
“You probably mourn from loosing almost everyone you love die in front of your eyes. You feel like the world is against you. Wherever you look, you see your nightmares coming to life. Am I right?” Tears started to form in his eyes, but he wiped them away quickly. I pondered what he said and agreed wholeheartedly. I felt his pain as if it was my own and we endured it together for a few minutes in silence. I finally broke the silence.
“You were right on the money about what I was feeling. Who did you loose?”
“My family and my best friend just last night,” he sniffled.
“I thought I lost my best friend too, but she came back to me thankfully.”
“You’re lucky. The General killed my friend.”
“Who’s he?”
“The worst person you will ever meet, believe me. He was the one who tortured Selena for the past three days.” he said with venom in his voice. I could tell he hated the man and I prayed I would never meet The General. A voice cut through our conversation and we both looked up to see Selena.
“What about The General?” she asked.
“We were just talking about what had happened in our lives since the beginning of the apocalypse.” Adrian replied.
“Well I never want to see The General again. I hope he gets eaten by the infected.” Selena viciously said.
“Woah there! Isn’t that a bit extreme?” I retorted.
“No!” Selena eyes sent daggers towards me. “You don’t even want to know what it was like,” a distant demeanor had overtaken her and I sat in silence. “Hey, can you tell me what happened to you and how you ended up here? It seems safe enough.”
“Fine, you would have to know eventually anyway.” I mumbled and Selena sat down in front of me, studying me curiously. The memories materialized in my mind and I was instantly pulled back into them, my eyes glazing over.
While I waited for Selena to come, I twiddled my thumbs and thought of my brilliant plan of taking everyone out to the countryside, where it should be safe. Hours went by and yet Selena had still not shown up. Where could she be? Did something bad happen to her so she couldn’t reach me? I glanced at my cellphone but no text messages had miraculously shown up on the screen. Ugh. I sat up on my bed and called out to my mom.
“Have you seen any sigh of Selena? I invited her over.”
“No, but I will keep my eye out for her,” my mom replied.
