Chapter 14
The General
My head painfully pounded as I slowly regained consciousness. Slowly I opened my eyes as they adjusted to the blinding light. As my eyes opened I surveyed my surroundings, taking in each foot of the room I was in. As I steadily bestirred myself out of my stupor I saw I wasn’t alone. Bodies and unconscious people littered the floor from the onslaught of the bombs’ detonation.
I got to my feet and began checking who was alive or not. As I probed people and felt their necks with my fingers for any pulse, but unsuccessfully I couldn’t find any soldiers alive in my searching. They all seemed to have died in the explosion. At least they died being a human and didn’t get turned into a zombie. I hurriedly rummaged through the soldiers’ belongings, examining anything that would be worth my while or could help me out surviving.
I was reaching into one of my comrades’ backpacks when I felt something prick my finger. Quickly I yanked back my finger with a yell causing whatever to slice my finger. Inspecting my finger for any damage done I instantly discerned a cut that ran most of the length of my finger where blood rushed out. My heart jumped at this revelation that something had cut me that easily. What could possibly be that sharp that when it grazed my finger it made such a gash?
Carefully and cautiously, using my other hand I reached inside the bag. Almost instantly I caught sight of a gleaming metal object. Attentively I picked it up like a mother would with her child. It was a long, thin knife that glistened with fresh blood on it’ tip. Its handle was made of fine wood and was carved in many intricate patterns. The knife was definitely something that would be useful to me in the future since this soldier made it so keen.
I placed it on the ground and promptly scoured the ground nearby for something to wrap the weapon in. I immediately noticed a dirty, old rag just a few feet away from me. I snatched it up right away; almost fearing it would disappear if I didn’t get it that instant. Carefully I wrapped the cloth around the knife and put in back in the soldiers bag, deciding that I would use the backpack for my own use.
At that moment the sound of breaking glass pierced through the tranquil, yet partially destroyed house. I jumped up in surprise, slinging the backpack on my shoulder in case I had to flee from the intruders. The sound of footfalls and crunching glass came in my direction, nearing me with every second. Fear crept in as a dark figure suddenly materialized from the shadows.
“We finally meet again,” a male voice said. His voice seemed oddly familiar, but I was unable to place where I had heard it before. “You probably don’t remember me,” he continued. “But I’m that guy who almost killed you back in your little fort.” He ominously laughed and knowingly smirked at me.
Now I recalled that night, it was one of the few nights I could never forget as long as I lived. I had thought he had died back there with the infected, but apparently I’ve been proven wrong. It scared me to think of how he tracked me and found me injured and defenseless here. He seemed to see that I wasn’t going to reply to him, so he continued talking once again.
“We have a disagreement that we need to settle for once and for all so…” he paused for a moment to give effect. “Lets finish this now!” He yelled and unexpectedly began running toward me. I stood there staring, unable to believe this was really happening. I was still somewhat shocked at him being here that I was frozen in place.
Before I knew it he was across the room, only a few feet away from me. He barreled toward me with startling speed before be jumped and tackled me midair. We fell down to the ground in a jumbled mess as we fought to be on the top. This happened for a few minutes, as neither of us was able to conquer the other with our punching and kicking. At last when I was about to do gain control of the situation he caught me by surprise and punched me hard in the stomach. As I doubled over in pain he used those that short time to pin my arms and legs to the ground.
