Chapter 8
Adrian
It had finally stopped pouring and now the rain was just a drizzle. I looked back towards where I saw Selena and Troy go careening off the road. I stopped a ways away, to become hidden from all the soldiers meandering around the crash site. I stood there, staring at the ruined car. They couldn’t have possibly survived the crash; it was terrible.
A few new Humvees come driving up to Selena’s car and its occupants run out and hurry over to the car, carrying 2 stretchers. The General confused me, one second he hurt you, the next he saved you. Who knows what’s wrong with him? They medical personnel that had just arrived pulled out 2 figures from the now smoking car. The doctors moved away from the wreckage as well as everyone else. They dispersed on the sidelines, waiting for their next orders from the General. The doctors quickly got to work on the two and it was hard to tell if any of them would make it through the night. But who knows, I was too far away from them to see much of what was happening.
A thought reverberated through my mind that caused me to smile. What if I could come up disguised as a soldier at their little camp when they finished up with saving Selena and Troy, I take them when they’re not looking. Brilliant, right? I wasn’t gonna leave the two after all the trouble it took to get them out of that cursed place. And I was definitely not letting them get carted back into that fort, no matter what.
Oh yes, I forgot to add that slowly, the infected were coming at a slow pace but thankfully they were still far away. I could hear their moans becoming louder, but I could tell they are few. The army would take them out swiftly, no need to worry.
Back to the situation at hand, I sauntered back to the stolen Humvee and hopped into the drivers seat. I turned it on and skillfully maneuvered the Humvee slowly in the darkness, not wanting anyone to see me coming from the wrong way. I circled around the radius of the camp and continued. I drove a few thousand feet and pivoted back around, toward the camp. I flipped on my lights and drove quietly to the camp. No one appeared to notice my arrival amongst them. I waited for the perfect moment.
I nervously waited the minutes by, my heart thumped inside my chest like a drum. At last, the time had come to get my uniform from an oblivious marching soldier. I opened my door and yanked him in, covering the soldier’s mouth so that he couldn’t scream for help. The alarmed guard tried to escape but failed at his attempt. I punched him in the temple and he passed out in a heartbeat. I took off his outer garments and put them on over my clothes. I grabbed the gun that was lying on the floor that he dropped and headed out into the drizzling rain, carrying the soldier on my back.
No one seemed to notice me getting out of the Humvee with him. I hurried over to the paramedics and told them that he had fainted and I rushed him over as quickly as possible. They nodded and thanked me. I put him down on a stretcher and observed as they worked on my friends, Troy and Selena. I glanced up and saw The General watching Selena intently. For what reason, I don’t know. He gave me the impression that he had some sort of unusual connection with her. Maybe she reminded him of a childhood friend.
I observed them for a few minutes and decided to inconspicuously gather information about The General and his little band. I strolled near Selena’s car and took in all the damage done too it. Unpredictably, it caught fire and exploded, launching bits and pieces of metal into the sky. I fell back from the blast and my ears had begun to ring from the high pitch of the detonation. I gaped at the destruction that the explosion caused. Metal was littered everywhere for miles. It was unbelievable. Even some of the soldiers were lying on the ground, stilled by the destruction. Good riddance and one less to be dealt with later. Fires had started to spread on the grass, but were quickly put out by the remaining soldiers.
