This is an observation of mine whenever an innocent child character enters the storyline of a book something happens to make them depressed and blame themselves for a friend's death.
So here we go!
1. Nico diAngelo-PJO, HoO, ToA
Soooooooo
not much explanation needed on this one. Nico was a happy kid till his sister died. Then he became all dark and skeletons and stuff.
2. Henry Haluki- The Unwanteds
For this one you got to here me out. Henry was a happy kid. After his mother died he became a healer because he feared losing anyone else. He blamed himself for not being able to save Meghan, and because of that he put to much pressure on himself to save Karkinos.
And more I can't think of. I might do a part two at some point.
