Part 2, Chapter 36
The Truth

New York, NY

(What started as a casual evening had taken an emotional unanticipated turn. In no way was Nicki expecting to be locked in the bathroom for 15 minutes, urinating on a plastic stick but she was. Meek and Carol had completely abandoned their dinner and huddled up in the kitchen. He was nervous, tensions were high, and Carol deflected any eye contact or conversation from him. Meek wanted to speak but he was too timid. Mama Carol was one who needed to be approached with caution and he didn't dare to offend her. Strangely, she spoke up first.)

Carol: "mi laik you Robert, mi du, but too soon, much too soon.... Mi dawta ah good gyal, shi deserve ah family"

Meek: "with all due respect... I'ma give her that"

Carol: "ou can yuh gi her dat? Shi should be ah wife! Nah some babi moda!! ... Stable!! Ah home, nah living outta ah hotel...hotel"

Meek: "That's NOT what it is with us, Im working to give her everything" (frustrated)

Carol: "Yuh cyan gi har dat!! (she shouts) yuh a nah reddi... Mi ave heard bout yuh... yuh a ah playa... inna an out of Jail!"

Meek: (calmly) "All that you talking is in the past..."

(Nicki can over hear them shouting from the bathroom. Knowing her mother, she could sense that she was not a fan of a long-term relationship between them. She could feel the emotion in Meek's voice; he was so often misunderstood. She listens intently incase Meek slips up and reveals the engagement.)

Carol: (cutting him off) "ah it?"

Meek: "Yeah! ... I aint no sucka... I really love Nick... like I'm not here for no games with her... I don't want to hurt her... none of that... I'ma a better man because of your daughter... I want the FAMILY now... I don't wanna be in the clubs no more... I ain't chasing no chicks out here... and I'm NOT going back to Jail... (Carol stares on)... You don't go to BELIEVE ME! As long as SHE trust me no, aint no disrespect to you ...but we GOOD..."

Carol: "Ah little babi ! Yuh a reddi for dat?"

Meek:" YEA! I'll drop whatever for MY family... I'm already A dad, I do that for my son"

Carol: "Ah di babi moda drama..."

(After listening to them go back and forth for a few minutes Nicki can take no more. Having her mother approve was most important for her. She had so much respect for her opinion and her perspective and couldn't stand to see her disappointed. She slowly opened the door, pregnancy test in hand, with a detached look on her face. Meek and Ms. Carol stop their conversation and look on anxiously. She walks over to where they are sitting and raises the test up for them to see)

Nicki: (she shakes her head) "I'm NOT..."

(The slight grin on Meek's face is wiped off as he lets out a big sigh and drops his head. Carol has a similar reaction only she is relieved. She reaches out to wrap her arms around Nicki and pulls her in for a hug)

Nicki: "I'm not... (she mumbles)

Carol: "Oh denk yuh Jesus! Praise him fada!!" (closely inspecting the stick) "yuh nah redii"

(Nicki looks up at Meek who seems to be dissapointed. His eyes are low as he stares at her and back to the ground. She reaches out to grab his hands which are trembling.)

Nicki: "you okay?" (she says sweetly)

Meek: "Yea... yea I'm straight"

Nicki: "It might be something else?"
