Chapter Two- Styrofoam
The rain hit hard on my textbook as I held it above my head, I lived pretty far from school, but on nice days, I didn't mind the walk; I would listen to my Walkman and just get lost in my mind. I would be home before I knew it. This was not one of those days my Walkman stayed safely in the bottom of my bag. I silently cursed Steve and Robin for leaving me at school today. The sound of a noisy car pulled me out of my thoughts. I watched it as it sped passed, only to come to a sudden stop wiping the rain out of my eyes. It backed up.
You have got to be kidding me, I thought to myself; what does he want? The window of his car slowly went down; he reached over, lowering his music, with a cigarette hanging out his mouth. "Why are you always wet when I see you?" "Uh, excuse me?", I spat back, offended. He furrowed his brow looking at me "oh", I laughed.
"Get in" he leaned over to open the passenger door. I didn't get to think about it as my feet rushed around the car. I was freezing and wanted to get out of this rain. "Thanks," I said as I shoved my bag at my feet. "See, this is how I'm used to seeing you", he nodded towards me. I look down at myself. I'm wearing Lee jeans, a band t-shirt from whatever band I was into that month and a now-drenched burnt brown corduroy jacket. "This is not how I'm used to seeing you," I say as I rub my hands over my arms. "Yeah, like what? he looks at me as he ashes in his ashtray. "Doing someone a favour."
"I'm taking you home, not giving you a liver", he exhales, and his voice sounds low and raspy. I sigh, thinking about going home and having to be quiet because dad is asleep and then mom coming home and waging war as soon as she walks through the door. He pulls me out of my thoughts.
"What's that for, that sigh?"
"I just don't want to go home, I guess." Billy nods, and it's silent for a moment; it looks like he's thinking about what waits for him at his house.
"Then don't."
"What?" confused by what he meant.
"I know this place I go when I don't wanna go home."
"Eww, I don't want to go to Tina's", I quickly rebuttal.
He laughs a real laugh, something I don't know if I've heard come from Billy. "Your funny, you know that." "Yeah, so where is this place then?" I agree with him a smug smirk on my face.
He smiles at me and turns the music up.
"A diner?" I look up at it from half out the passenger door "yep", Billy walks ahead as I slam shut the door. Billy's head whips back "gentle Jesus."
"Sorry", I bite my lip, walking up to him; he shakes his head while he opens the door to the diner, definitely regretting his decision of picking me up.
"A diner. I didn't pick you to be a diner guy." He doesn't say anything. He keeps walking through the quaint little place till he reaches a table near a big window it's boarded with stained glass.
"Sit", He barks at me like an order. I shot him a death glare, but I oblige.
He walks back from the counter with two cokes in his hand sitting he slides one over to me. I don't look at him. My focus is on the incredible view of the sun moving down the mountain as it sets. The whole sky is pink; the sky always looks beautiful after the rain.
"This is why."
I look at him, snapping out of my haze but not saying anything.
"The diner", he explains ", you can't beat the view of that forest, and those mountains, plus they have all the games on." He points at the Tv up near the counter. I nod, taking a sip from my drink. "Yeah, this place is pretty rad, so you just come out here alone and watch the game?" He shrugs "yeah, pretty much. I normally get dinner, then go next door get a few beers, maybe a bottle of whiskey, drink in the forest sometimes, bring a few buddies, and will go to a party or two."
