Chapter Twelve - How to lose a friend

My fingers spun the dial buttons, and I took a breath hanging up the phone before it rang. I paced up and down my kitchen. I couldn't get this sinking feeling out of my stomach. I sighed and grabbed the phone again, spinning the numbers. My heart was beating out of my chest. "Hello." I was relieved he answered the phone, not Max or Neil. "Hey", my voice sounded more squeaky than I would like. "What's wrong?" Billy asks.

"Nothing," I say back, maybe a bit too fast.

"Then why do you sound upset?" he questions.

"Are you busy? Can I come see you?"

"I'll come pick you up, Y/n what's wrong? I'm not stupid; I know something wrong."

"It's. I'll talk to you when you get here, okay."

"Fine, alright", Billy hangs up the phone.

I opened the door. Billy barrelled in, not waiting for an invitation. I close the door, and he stands centre of the room, arms folded. "Did you want to get out of here? go to the lake or your house?" I ask Billy, all confidence in me shot. He shakes his head "here's fine; what's wrong?" I walk up to him and gesture for him to sit down he does. I sit across from him on my Dad's favourite lazy-boy chair. "I have to tell you something, but you got to promise not to be mad", he frowns, pushing his tongue to his cheek. "What happened?" his voice is low and serious.

"Billy, you have to promise," his eyes lock on to me "is this about Harrington?"

My eyes look at the floor, and Billy stands up, wiping his mouth; he moves near the door. "What did he do?"

"Billy," I say, standing but staying in my place.

"What happened!" Billy raises his voice.

"Sit down, okay, sit down, and will talk."

A reluctant Billy walks back over and sits on the edge of the sofa.

"Steve dropped me home today, and we got into an argument about well about you." Billy nods along his leg shaking up and down in anticipation.

"And then, um, he, Steve, kissed me."

Billy stops cold, and his eyes stare through me.

"I pushed him away, and I told him to leave Billy okay, I'm sorry." I speak so fast I'm not sure he can understand me.

Billy clasped his hands together; looking down, he asks, "did you kiss him back?" I shake my head no, but I say, "yes, at first, for a second till I released what was going on." Billy stands up, and so do I.

I follow him as he paced up and down my lounge room. His quiet for too long "Billy, say something." Billy stops and looks at me "what else did he say?"

"Does it matter, Billy?" I can see from his face it does.

"He just said we weren't right for each other and that he was in love with me." Billy steps closer to me. "And what did you say?"

"What do you think I said, Billy. I told him to leave. I told him It's too late. I told him I didn't love him, not like I love you."

It's too late; I've said it. Billy stops pacing and walks up to me his face has changed from anger to shock, maybe. "You love me?" he asks "maybe" that sinking feeling in my stomach is back he moves in closer to me, putting his hands around my waist "well shit I love you too Y/n."

It's Saturday night with hands clasped together. Billy and I walk around the Carnival when a familiar voice calls out; as we turn around, the kids run up to us. Mike holds a giant plush ladybug, and Dustin and Lucas have their mouths full of cotton candy. "You guy's here alone?" I ask, but I don't need them to answer as Robin and Steve emerge from around the corner. The last time I saw Steve was that day.

At school on Friday, he didn't sit at our table said he was helping in the gym. I knew he was avoiding me.

I called Robin, and she said to give him some space, but I didn't think that space would mean all my friends too.

They join up with the kids and us. Steve drops off but slowly makes his way over, hands in his pocket, he stands behind the kids, "Hey!" Robin hugs me. "I'm gonna steal her for a second." Robin leads me off, leaving Steve, Billy and the kids to it. Billy doesn't take his eyes off Steve, Max can sense the tension and tries to ease it. "So Billy, how are you and Y/n going? Is this a date we're interrupting?" Billy smiles a cocky smile as he answers. Not looking at Max, he speaks, looking at Steve, "yeah, we're really good; she told me she loved me gosh, that was nice to hear. It's always nice when someone says they love you, isn't that right Harrington?"

"Billy", Max warns, but he pushes past them and stands in Steve's space.

Robin drags me over near the fun house ride." Hey, I know what this must look like, but we would have invited you just Steve needed to get out the house, and the kids wanted to come here", she's rambling, so I put her out her misery.

"Hey I get It it's fine we still on for tomorrow?" Robin smiles. "Uh, of course, It's Little Shop of Horrors. I've been waiting to see it all week."

I don't know if it's the realisation that avoiding Steve isn't going to work in the long run, I ask "maybe even invite Steve, I mean, we can't argue in the cinema", Robin puts on her best fake smile. "Yeah I'm sure he will come his probably over it by now." She's lying but I pretend not to notice.

As we head back to the group, we both look around, they aren't where we left them. We hear some voices coming from behind a ride. We run up to them as the kids gather around Steve and Billy. They are yelling at them, telling them to calm down and to leave each other alone, they don't listen.

In Steve's face, Billy smiles as he talks like he is enjoying this. "You think you can kiss my girlfriend, think you can talk shit about me, Harrington?"

Steve shakes his head "Man, I don't give a shit about you, and nothing happened with Y/n and me, okay."

"That's not what I heard", Billy spits back with venom.

Steve, over this and not wanting to fight, steps back. "Look, you have her what more do you want?"

Billy nods and shrugs. "This!" Billy swings, punching Steve across the face he stumbles back, putting his hand down on the floor to stop from falling over. Steve rises to his feet and steps towards Billy, grabbing him by the shirt. Steve antagonises him. "Hit me all you want; I can't un-kiss her."

Steve smirks, and they both end up on the floor as they fight and fall over one another.

The kids yell at them. Dustin rolls his eyes walking away he can't watch Steve take another beating.

I move in front of the kids and stand over Billy and Steve, who are grappling on the floor. "Enough!" I call out, and they stop. Billy pushes back, and Steve sits his legs out, resting on his hands they look up at me I shake my head. "I can't do this anymore, this fighting the both of you I'm done."

Billy gets up fast. As Steve goes to get up from the dirt, Billy pushes him back down and leans over him, "stay away from her, you hear me."

"Y/n!", he calls out, rushing after me.

Author note I'm still crying about Alexei.
