Chapter Five - Junkyard blues
Despite the major loss, Steve still was congratulated with a few "good games and will get them next time" pats on the back as we walked down the hall. He was getting his crown back, and it showed Steve was buzzing today, even after the loss.
"What are you so happy about, dingus?" Robin shoves Steve to the side. "Nothing, I don't know. I had to help Dustin with a code "red" apparently. Last night after the game, and we ended up back at the Wheelers, Nancy, and I got to talking, and"...
"Steve" Robin and I already know where this is going. "I know, I know, but it was just good to talk, that's all", The day went by fast. I saw Billy as I left. He waited by his car as I got into Steve's, we looked at each other for only a second something in me wanted him to come over to pull me out of Steve's car to say something to me anything, but he didn't. "Can you drop me off at the station today. I'm going with my Dad shopping for Mom's birthday," I ask Steve but don't sound pleased about it, "But we're all going to the junkyard tonight, Dustin brought fireworks; that's what the code red was."
Steve shakes his head, but he sells it because I feels disappointed already.
"Aww man, is that tonight? Maybe if I'm finished early, I'll come later."
"Hey, Y/n", Hopper nods to me as he walks into the station. "He shouldn't be much longer." I let out a sigh; I feel like I've been waiting for ages "have somewhere to be?" Hopper looks at me, amused at my impatience. "Yeah, kind of." I flick through an old magazine.
"Those fireworks at the junkyard thing? he asks, and I look up at him, confusion on my face "uh," Hopper explains himself, "El told me, that's the rules you want to go you tell."
Finally my Dad walks through the door. "You ready kiddo?", Stargate Mall is as busy as ever my Dad was indecisive and time was ticking on. "Yeah just get that one." I approve of the ninth item I've been shown from records to a new hair curling set cook books and pyjamas we have been into every store. "Let's go" I sigh. "Hold your horses" he holds up two necklaces eyeing between them "yep this one" he makes his decision and were headed towards the register. "On second thought" he goes to walk back "dad!" I scold him, "I'm joking, I'm joking" we both laugh.
Finally home as I look at my clock in the Kitchen, my hopes of meeting everyone fade. As I settle in to have a boring night at home doing homework and watching Dallas my phone rings ."Hello", my voice laced with disappointment. "Billy?"
"Just listen, don't hang up", Billy's voice comes through the other line.
"Why are you calling me Billy?"
"I want to make it up to you, okay? Let's meet up and talk, alright."
I'm not falling for it, I think to myself, but then I get an idea. "You want to make it up to me, pick me up from down the street as fast as you can." I hang up the phone and tell my parents I have to give Robin my half of the chemistry homework, racing out the door and down the street Billy's car already waiting. "You're going to drop me off at the junkyard, and then maybe ill think about talking." Billy looks at me, surprised. "Now, Billy", he presses his tongue against his mouth. I can tell he's pissed at me, but he complies.
His car comes up the dirt track. It's slow, so not as loud. I see everyone standing around handing out a few coolers and camp chairs I've made it before the fireworks just in time.
As his car pulls into focus, every pair of eyes is on it. Max drops Lucas's hand like her life depends on it. Steve and Jonathan walk towards the car but stop in their tracks; when I step out, Steve steps toward. "What the hell is this?" I hold my jacket in my arm as I talk, "oh, I just needed a lift or I wouldn't have made it here in time." Steve doesn't say anything but looks at Billy through the windscreen and begins to walk over to his side.
