-In the Kingsleigh Manor-
"Charles, you have finally lost your senses. This venture is impossible," Lord Ascot states. Adrian, Charles Kingsleigh's middle child, and only son was just around the corner, listening to the grown-ups' conversation. Adrian loved listening to his father talk about his ideas for expanding trade routes. "For some. Gentlemen, the only way to achieve the impossible, is to believe it is possible," Charles claimed, smiling at the other men in the room. Another man had scorn in his eyes, "That kind of thinking could ruin you." Charles stared at the man with seriousness, "I am willing to take that chance. Imagine trading posts in Rangoon, Bangkok, Jakarta..." Adrian noticed his little sister Alice walk by in a dreamlike trance. Adrian always wondered how his sister had those vivid, strange dreams, but he never asked and hid behind a desk to avoid being seen by his father when he went to tuck Alice back in.
Charles looked at his daughter sadly, "The nightmare again?" Adrian scrunched up his nose, he wouldn't call them nightmares. He thought Alice's dream was a wonder to the world. Talking and smoking caterpillars, twins that spoke funny, and a Mad Hatter? The only thing that stuck with Adrian was when Alice mentioned a White Queen. Every time he heard about her, a rush of warmth ran through him, like he was supposed to like her. Adrian gagged at the thought of love, but children are always supposed to have that belief I guess.
Alice nodded to her father's question. Charles looked at the men in the room and walked towards his daughter, holding a hand out, "I won't be long." Charles went to take Alice back to her room to talk with her and tuck her in. Adrian mentally cheered, his father never saw him! So when he gets back Adrian can continue listening. "Adrian, my son, it is also past your bedtime." Charles smiled and said without turning around. He seemed to always know when Adrian was listening in. Adrian groaned and hung his head, "Father, I'm 12 and how can you possibly know when and where I am?" Charles laughed and ruffled his son's hair, "Adrian, I am your father and I did the same thing when I was your age." Charles hugged his son and sent him off to bed, then tended to Alice.
This was one of Adrian's favorite moments with his Father. If only he knew that there wouldn't be much more of those fun times, he would have made much more memories to remember his father, Charles Kingsleigh.
