The carriage pulls into Lord and Lady Ascot's manor. I really don't want to go. I pretend to faint. "Adrian stop acting like a child," Mother scolds. I pout, while she pulls my arm. "I know you don't want this for Alice but she needs this," Mother stated after Alice walked a little ahead. I sighed and nodded, knowing I can't do anything about this.
Mother and Alice quickly walk up to where Lord and Lady Ascot are waiting. I lollygag behind, just looking at everything. "At last. We thought you'd never arrive," Lady Ascot said with distaste, "Alice, Hamish is waiting to dance with you. Go." I growled under my breath at the demanding tone in her voice. Alice looks at mother before scurrying off. I walk up beside mother and continue gazing around. "You do realize it's well past four o'clock, now everything will have to be rushed through," Lady Ascot sneered. Mother tried to apologize, only to be cut off by Lady Ascot's never mind.
I snapped my head to Lady Ascot's gaze, "And you do realize that my mother is trying her best with Alice. Alice doesn't know anything about what is taking place today. So you will have to deal with it, and if Hamish is true to his word about wanting to marry my sister, then he will be patient. Just as you will. I am technically the man of the Kingsleigh home and I will deny everything that will take place here today if you continue to treat my mother and sister with disrespect." Lady Ascot scoffed and walked away in a huff. I looked to Lord Ascot, "I would like to apologize for my behavior towards your wife, but I will not be sorry for what I said." Lord Ascot smiled and looked to my mother, "Forgive my wife. She's been planning this affair for over twenty years. Adrian, you do not have to apologize for anything. I believe your father would have been proud of you for protecting your family." I smiled and shook his hand. Mother sighed sadly, "If only Charles were here."
Lord Ascot looked off into the distance sadly, "My condolences. I think of your husband often. He was truly a man of vision. Many believe Adrian will carry on his ways." He grinned and winked at me. "But I do hope you don't think I've taken advantage of your misfortunes." Mother shook her head, "Of course not. I'm pleased that you purchased the company. Adrian might have loved hearing his father talk about it, but he never was interested in taking over." I sighed, "I was never interested because I didn't think it would come this soon. If I'd only known, I would have learned as much as possible." Lord Ascot patted my back, "Somethings just don't work out the way we hoped. But I was a fool for not investing in his mad venture when I had the chance." Mother laughed through her nose, "Charles thought so too." I smirked and gave mother a kiss on the cheek, "I'm going to mingle around with the ladies and gossip, maybe talk about what happened in the square yesterday." Mother swatted my arm, "You stop that and don't intimidate Hamish. I know you, Ari." I pouted while Lord Ascot laughed, then walked away.

"He does have a knack for acting like his father," Lord Ascot said to Helen Kingsleigh. Helen grinned, "And I'm glad, it's like Charles is still here." Lord Ascot just patted Helen's arm and they both walked off to join the party.
