"high school au"

I believe this prompt was sent to me by gallifreyanheartss.tumblr.com, but I lost the message original message so please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm so glad I finally get to do this, because I've had the idea for this for such a long time (I wanted to take this in a different direction than the other high school au fanfics I've seen). I hope you like it. I'm sorry this took so long, by the way. School has kept me so busy that I fell behind on all my prompts, but it's just about over so you'll get your one shots soon enough. (: That being said: Send me more prompts!

Spring was finally here, Rose could tell. The sky was bluer than she had seen it in months, and birds were actually chirping outside. She wasn't normally a morning person, but hearing the sound of songbirds and feeling the sun shining through the window and falling on her skin put her in a wonderful mood. The temperature outside was a wonderful thirty degrees Celsius, perfect to wear her new romper. It was a nice change from the long pants and pastel jackets she was wrapping herself in just months ago.

Outside, she heard the beep of a car horn. That would be John Smith, her best friend since freshman year when he moved to an apartment building just a block from Rose's. For the past two years, he had driven her to school every day without fail. The only exception was when Rose was sick or just simply didn't feel like going in one day. She ran outside and waved to him. When he looked up, she held up a finger to tell him to give her just one more minute. They both knew she really meant five.

John was waiting in his little blue car with his music turned all the way up. He was dressed up again, as he usually did. Rose asked him why he always looked so nice once, and he said it was just because he thought you should always dress your best because you never know who you might run into. "You don't want to see the love of your life while you're in a stained t-shirt and sweatpants, do you?" he had asked her. So she asked him about the red sand shoes

When Rose finally came out, John unlocked the door for her. She slid into the brown seat with ease and turned down the music. She handed John a brown paper bag with his name scrawled across the front in red ink. He took it and peeked inside at the contents – a burnt grilled cheese sandwich and a bruised apple, with a juice box for a drink.

"Mum asked me to give you that," Rose said, buckling herself in. John scoffed and set the bag down as he put the car in gear.

"Right. Remind me to have poison control on speed dial if I decide to eat it," he joked. It was no secret that Rose's mother wasn't the best cook in the universe, but she did try. John knew first hand of that. He once had food poisoning for a week because Rose's mum wanted to serve a seafood dish at her fifteenth birthday but hadn't cooked it nearly as long as she should have.

John and Rose were in the same class first thing in the morning. It was science, a class Rose only halfway understood and John knew well enough to sleep in every day, yet still pass without a problem. Rose herself was getting tired of today's lecture and began to nod off. John was no help, snoring in the seat behind her with his head leaned all the way back. He was growing incredibly loud, and Rose wanted to smack him before the cranky old substitute teacher sent him to the office for punishment. She didn't have a chance to do anything, though.

Down the hall, an odd noise was heard. It sounded like something from Star Wars, like the sound of a light saber turning on, but slightly different. It sounded like something was being scanned for a split second. People were screaming, which made the teacher quite annoyed. After all, "how dare anyone interrupt this class time?" She was walking to the door as Rose watched multiple people run past. A metallic voice emanated from the hallway.

"EXTERMINATE," it said. It was odd and robotic, with no feeling behind it. Rose wasn't sure if it was a narration or a command – maybe both. John was somehow still asleep through this, but the screams were getting louder.
